Bay Area Residents Registering New Democratic Voters in Oregon by Phone
ReDefeatBush.com is opening weekly calling crews in the Bay Area, events at which volunteers will register new Democratic voters in the closely contested state of Oregon by telephone. Bay area residents will meet every Monday evening in Oakland and every Tuesday evening in Berkeley. Volunteers who do not bring cell phones will be supplied with them, as well as with lists of unregistered single women age 18-45 in the most highly Democratic zip codes in Oregon, and guidance in how to register new voters over the phone. ReDefeatBush.com already holds similar weekly calling crews in Washington, D.C., New York, Virginia, and Maryland, all phoning to Pennsylvania.
Volunteers at ReDefeatBush.com Calling Crews utilize an innovative online database of nonvoters accessed through laptops and wireless connections, minimizing the paperwork and record keeping required in this campaign.
The first event in California will be on Monday, April 19th, and every future Monday until Bush is redefeated, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Upaya Center, 478 Santa Clara Ave., Ste. 300, in Oakland (on corner, straight across Grand from the Grand Lake Theater; free parking on street after 6 p.m. and in lot under overpass; entrance on Lakepark).
The second group will meet on Tuesday, April 27th, and every future Tuesday until Bush is out of there, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Cafe de la Paz, 1600 Shattuck Ave., in Berkeley (at corner of Cedar and Shattuck; free parking in rear lot; entrance on Cedar).

The Committee to ReDefeat the President is an independent expenditure committee not affiliated with any candidate. Headquartered on the Internet at www.redefeatbush.com , its purpose is to effectively channel volunteer activities into political action that will defeat President Bush. It raises money through online contributions, events, and the sale of merchandise, including buttons, bumper stickers, T-shirts, lawn signs and condoms.
In cooperation with other organizations, it sponsors Calling Crews nationwide. At these gatherings, activists with cell phones make phone calls to households that are likely to register as Democrats but are not currently registered to vote, and those without cell phones write letters to the voters who cannot be successfully contacted by telephone. Concentrating on a handful of key battleground states, ReDefeatBush will organize 20,000 volunteers to register on average 50 new Democratic voters each, totaling a million new voters by election day 2004.
