Gay marriage poll: I hope I've made at least a small difference...
Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 07:21 PM by Cannikin
I went to the gay.com chat rooms and literally went into every room with more than a few people in them and posted this message:

"Please go to this address:

http://www.vote.com/vote/60179934/index.phtml

and vote NO! There should NOT be an amendment to prevent gay marriage. Thank you! We're loosing badly!"

I'm doing everything I can think of to get this poll in our favor. Emails are generated and sent to Congress as soon as you submit your vote. I just heard about it today. Unfortunately, the poll has been there for 30 days. We are way behind.
I checked the results before & after my chat room campaign. There were 200 more votes opposing the amendment than there was before I started. And only 10 more supporting it. But we still have the 30 day gap against us. So please get the word out about this poll.

1. Gay marriage may be an issue that will cost the Dems the election in 2004
I can feel it in my bones.

2. Are your bones gay?
No offense meant, but, do you face this discrimination daily, as I do?

3. Are you kidding? Most dems are a few poll figures away...

from turning there backs on us. We are pretty much a group with few choices in the next election.
We need to show both parties that we deserve respect. I dont see how we can cost them the election. So far, we have nobody else to give our vote. We've really got to work hard to make our message heard over that of the right-wing.

4. Not all the polls are bad...
This was sent to me by a friend, who also happens to be clergy.

I hope maybe the results so far on this will give you a boost. The "yesterday" referred to was actually last Friday, the 19th. It has come a long way in a few days.

The American Family organization is taking a poll on their website about gay marriage. They tried to only let on to their supporters (those who oppose any marital rights for gay couples) that the poll was going on, and they plan to send the results to Congress. But the word got out! As of yesterday, it was 55% opposed -- today it is down to 45% opposed and almost 47% for -- plus the folks who favor option 3, civil union but without the word "marriage".

5. Banning gay marriage will not save marriage
The institution of marriage has been on the skids ever since divorces became easy to obtain and the social stigma of living together and having children out of wedlock was lifted. People who vote "yes" live in a dream world where there is a two parent nuclear family where only the dad works and the mom stays home and bakes cookies. It wasn't real in the 50s and it isn't real now. That there is a group that wants to have the right to marry is SUPPORTING the institution, not tearing it down.

6. Amendment will not happen
I don't see the constitution being amended. Especially for taking away rights. I have not hear Bush say, from his own mouth. The he was in favor of a ban on gay marriage. I have only heard him say he is in favor of unions. I have seen the stories, but I have not heard it come from his lips.

7. Sorry you missed it...

But George has indeed said he would support a ban. to make marriage between one man and one woman. Were you not watching the news after the Mass. supreme court decision when the backlash started? I'm sure you can dig it up in someones archive.
I just wonder if he'll do it before or after the election.

And thanks to those who participated in the survey. We've gotten 500 more votes in our favor and only around 50 on the other side, since yesterday. Unfortunately, that still makes it 72% in favor of banning same sex marriage. So keep passing the link around if possible! Thank you!

10. I guess we're too late on that one....
Edited on Fri Dec-26-03 10:06 AM by Cannikin
The poll had already been open for 30 days before I heard about it. I did everything I could to spread the word.

We definately blew them away on the other one at least.
