1. Here is a copy of the message I just sent to the mayor

Dear Sir,
I would like to commend you on the inclusion of Planned
Parenthood to your potential recipients. While some have criticized
your 'choice' of sending some of the funds to that organization, it is doubtful that those people know what the word 'random' means, as
it applies to this case. They do not realize that any of the
organizations included in the drawing could have been recipients. I
would urge you to proceed as you planned, without much concern
for those who would distribute false information about Planned
Parenthood, using it as a straw man to promote their narrow
agenda regarding women's reproductive rights. I support Planned
Parenthood locally and am proud to say that the organization is
primarily interested in promoting women's education about
reproduction and contraception, rather than advocating the use of
abortion as a form of contraception. I have long admired your great
state and your beautiful city, having spent an entire summer
working in Anchorage. It saddens me that we seem to have
exported some of our narrow minded vitriol to the last great frontier.

3. Local birth control to replace zoning

Birth control is by orders of magnitude the most cost-effective way for local governments to protect the environment and should therefore replace all other environmental efforts, especially zoning, density and height limits. It is even worth selling parks to fund birth control, the environment will experience a net gain.
http://www.projectprevention.org is a useful model on which local governments can base such a program, however its recipients should be expanded from just addicts to everyone, because even the best people burden the environment. Federal and state governments are failing miserably to prioritize population and birth control programs, so it is up to pioneering LOCAL governments, with a variety of constituencies, to lead the way on population.
