black box voting - bev harris
Is there a link to a succinct summation of the problems that happened with this org? I have a friend working with them and I want them to be fully informed.

Thanks in advance.

6. I never said a bad word about her. I wrote a lot of proof of concept code for bbv.
Once I demonstrated how easily the machines could be hacked(as did hundreds of other people), I ignored the whole issue.

I just say it will end in tears because a lot of other people here hate her guts. As to whether or not any of them ever lifted a finger to help the effort, I couldn't possibly comment...

4. yeah, that why I used the word "succinct."
when I saw the org listed as a partner in something they are working on, it was a big red flappy flag.

9. Well, I can give a bit of a summary
Let's see.

She started with good intentions, I believe, and truly believed in the BBV issue. Then she started to get weird and mean. Ticked off Keith Olbermann. Ticked off Randi Rhodes. Started to damage the movement. Came on DU and threatened to sue DU - can't remember the exact reason. Got kicked off of DU. Had sock puppets come and plead her case. Never accounted for the money that Randi Rhodes's show raised for her.

To me, the best glimpse into how she is: She did not pay Andy Stephenson's medical insurance like she was supposed to. She fired him without telling him directly that he was fired. When he got the cancer, she was nasty to him and implied that he was lying. He had no job and no insurance. He died.

Bev is toxic. She is vindictive and petty.

Encourage your friend to find another group that works for VVPBs and election reform. Those groups exist out there.

And for the BevBots: I worked in the trenches for election reform so don't even respond and say that I can't criticize Bev.

10. That's pretty succinct, and I add
Bev would come to DU sometimes daily, asking for all kinds of research/legwork from Duers about various elections laws/equipment in every state.

If you look back in the archives, you can find threads "I need info on Kansas..." "I need info on Calinforna..."

She did this for MONTHs.

Then turned around and got mean with all those who did all that research FOR FREE for her because they believed in the cause. She would accuse people of stealing "her" research, trying to muscle in on "her" project.

I'm serious. She was that paranoid

She also threatened to sue a fellow Tarheel, who offered to publish her book, even though it wasn't within the scope of his publishing house. She treated him the same way she treated Andy.

The woman is mentally ill.

12. Don't forget that she published her book and did not give
credit to DU or DUers for all of their research.

14. Yep, i remember that
That's when she started getting mean; instead of "we" and "our", everything became "me" and "mine."

She didn't want to share credit with all the DUers who did her foot soldier work for her.

That's when I started tuning her out.

DUers also donated a lot of money to her, before the money that RR raised, and she never gave an honest accounting of that money either.

21. yes. I remember that she was asked for her tax records
She finally gave her tax records but they were so fucked up that no one could tell what she had done with the money.

I never sent her a fucking dime. I'm glad that I didn't. I spent my money on other groups and the research I was doing.

And thanks for reminding me why she threatened to sue DU. I was one of the ones sending her data.

23. sordid is a good descripton
Honestly? it was kind of hard to sort out. Ethics don't always = popularity, so just because the vast majority of posters on the various threads were "against" her, I couldn't use that as a metric. That the owners/admins/mods judged against her did weigh a bit, based on my personal experience here. Her own behavior towards Andy Stephenson, in particular listing what he was fired for on her website was the clincher. That was unprofessional to say the least whether true or not. Added together gives someone with a lot of control issues - both in wantiong to control everybody else and unable to control self. I can certainly relate to that myself LOL, but bottom line is most of the problems were her own doing.

Having said that, it was several years ago...has she changed or improved her organizational/personal skills or is she still leaving a wake of disgruntled activists behind her?

16. I asked around here for alternatives to support and one name that came up was EFF
Electronic Frontier Foundation. They send out occasional emails. Anyhow, I hope others here will suggest alternatives for you.

As for Bev, it's important not to let a veil of amnesia drop around her behavior.

Hekate
