Take Action: Tell Congress: Send Scooter to Guantanamo

Tell Congress: Send Scooter Libby to Guantanamo

Today a judge ruled that Scooter Libby must begin serving his prison sentence while his appeal proceeds. The former Assistant to the President (and Vice Presidential Chief of Staff) has been sentenced to a 30 month jail sentence for obstruction of justice and perjury during the investigation of who revealed the identity of covert CIA agent Valerie Plame. Why not send Libby to Gitmo?

If anyone deserves to be housed in Guantanamo, it is Scooter Libby. He betrayed the national security of this country by outing Valerie Plame, who was working to to stop the spread of weapons of mass destruction. Even former President George H. W. Bush called those who reveal the names of covert operatives "the most insidious of traitors." Hundreds of prisoners at Guantamo have not even been accused of crimes, but are still being held without being convicted. Scooter Libby has already been convicted. If Guantanamo isn't good enough for Libby, then it isn't good enough for anyone.

1. Egypt first, then Guantanamo
I think he needs to be questioned at length by the kindly Egyptian authorities first.

2. wrong logic here
For one thing, the US Naval Base at Guantanamo has been occupied illegally by the US since 1902. The Cuban people have consistently demanded the closure of this illegally-occupied piece of Cuban territory at least since 1959.

Scooter Libby can serve time in any of the federal prisons on US territory.

The Guantanamo base needs to be closed and returned to Cuba. All current prisoners there need to be repatriated or freed to a country where their lives won't be endangered. All the secret evidence against them needs to be publically re-examined and presented in a civilian court of law.

3. that was fun...
makes for a nice mental image of 'justice'. I so hate this political system, and see no redeeming qualities in prison sentences. It is the jailing of over two million Americans for crimes.. which pale to nothingness.. in comparison to those crimes that have brought so much death and destruction to so many. It's kind of ironic that 'law and order' types spout about integrity, and high roads for everyone but those who can afford to buy their way out.
