Group plans anti-war letter-writing campaign

A Burlington area peace group is calling on Congress to stop funding the war in Iraq and immediately bring U.S. troops there home.

Thirteen members of Citizens for Peace met Sunday at the home of cochairman Dick Distelhorst and agreed to mount a concerted antiwar letterwriting campaign.

The group, which numbers about 70, has met several times since the war began in March 2003 to protest U.S. involvement. The action Sunday coincides with movement in the U.S. Senate to craft a non&binding resolution opposing President Bush's plan to send an additional 21,000 troops into Iraq.

"The only real power Congress has to end the war is the power of the purse," Distelhorst said. "At the moment, Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi and Sen. (Harry) Reid both say that cutting off funding for the war is 'off the table' because they don't want to endanger the troops. But what could endanger the troops more than keeping them in Iraq?"...
