General Fuzzy was a family member's companion who was brutally murdered while they were in Texas for a funeral. He was a very sweet, loving and theraphy dog who went to a local nursing home and brightened many hearts there. He was behind 25' fences on his own property, and if the other dogs hadn't run into the house, we are sure they would have been brutally murdered as well. The perpertrators left the scene and later returned with the gun, premiditated and intentional murder. We want to push our DA to take this to court and to do what is right, not just for General Fuzzy's account, but for his family and all other companions that are threatened in society by cruel owners or anyone else.

We are needing all of you to sign the petition and forward it as well to
everyone you might have on your emailing lists. We all have names that someone else doesn't. We want to reach the goal of 4,000, but if we go higher that would be even better..

6. Not to diminish the severity of this (I signed)

but please use the correct terms because in some states the killing of a SERVICE animal warrants a much more severe penalty.

A 'service' animal is one that provides assistance to its owner and is more than just a companion. They operate light switches, pick up items, open doors, pull wheelchairs, alert the deaf, guide the blind.

A THERAPY animal is one that brings cheer and comfort to children, the elderly and those hospitalized. More than a companion but less than a service animal.

And, it's not clear to me that a therapy dog who works exclusively on "cheer and comfort" isn't also a service dog.

10. When it comes to the legality and penalties for the harm

to such a dog, it makes a big difference. Sorry, but a therapy dog is still classed as a companion animal.

Here in SC, the penalty for harming a service animal is the same as it is for harming a police dog. For a therapy animal it is the same as for a companion animal.

The main point I was trying to make is that if we expect to make a dent in laws that regard these animals as property...no matter their function...then we have to be VERY precise in how we refer to them.
