SAN FRANCISCO - Demonstrators rallied outside the headquarters of Charles Schwab Corp. on Thursday, protesting what they say is a conspiracy between politicians and major banks and investment firms to change Social Security.
The event was among organized protests in about 70 cities sponsored by the AFL-CIO, drawing labor union members and those in or nearing retirement. Demonstrators also targeted banker Wachovia Corp. in Washington, D.C.
In San Francisco, protesters said Schwab should renounce its participation in the Alliance for Worker Retirement Security, a lobbying group pushing for Social Security changes.
"People pay into the system and we expect to get a pension when we retire," said Jan Adams, a 57-year-old San Francisco woman who is contemplating retirement. "Bush wants to give this money to his friends to play with." <snip>
