Call for legal monitors and pro bono defense attorneys!

On Friday March 11, 2005, Judge Hibbler dismissed the March 19 coalition's suit to march down Michigan Avenue. On Saturday, March 19th, a coalition of anti-war groups will be protesting on the 2nd anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq. Given the potential for mass arrests, we are again seeking assistance from lawyers, law students, and legal workers to monitor the police at the protest as legal observers. In addition, we need lawyers who are available to be on call to represent those who are arrested and need assistance at the station. Please contact KevinVodak from the local chapter's Mass Defense Committee at kvodak@yahoo.com with your availability and the number(s) where you be reached on March 19th.

1. Court backs city on banning march

CHICAGO -- A federal court judge Friday dismissed a lawsuit brought by peace activists to reverse the city's denial of a permit to march on Michigan Avenue on the second anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.

Judge William Hibbler granted the city's request for summary judgment, agreeing that the Chicago Coalition Against War and Racism and the March 19 Chicago Coalition did not present sufficient evidence to require a full court hearing on whether the city denied the permit because it "disfavors the content of the coalition's speech."

The coalitions sought a permit for March 19, but city officials said it would be too disruptive to traffic and would require a large police presence. They offered to let the coalitions march on Clark Street instead.
