Petition to close down a ``puppy mill'' in Lancaster County, Penn.
Please take a moment to sign this petition. These dogs are living in deplorable conditions and need someone to speak for them. You can read the history of this, but it is beyond description. This would never have been allowed to continue in New York State. Lawmakers in Pennsylvania need to step up to the plate and enact stricter animal protection legislation. Thank you for your time.
Rhiannon

4. Here are a few
Apparently this guy has been in trouble for this over several years. How he managed to stay in ``business'' is a mystery to me. In New York State, where I live, this clearly violates animal cruelty laws and he would have been behind bars long ago.:grr:

5. Absolutely not! Please sign!
I live in New York State and e-mailed this petition to friends as far away as Washington, Colorado, California, Minnesota and Indiana. If you check the other signatures, you will see that they come from all over the country. And if you read the remarks, you will see that they are all outraged.

13. Bless you, my friend
I was just speaking of you to a friend I have in animal rescue. I told her that you kicked my petition, which I had sent her, but, also, for all you do for your kitties who have health problems. I sent her a couple of links to DU. I cannot don't know her political leanings; she may have none. I told her that she would find kindred spirits regarding animals, everyday, on DU. I hope she registers, even if it is just for the animals, as she will receieve so much in return, including an excellent education.

Thanks for kicking my petition(once again, no one noticed).:-)

These poor dogs need someone to speak for them. This is unconscionable and has gone on for much too long. If this Daniel Esh lived in New York State, he would have been behind bars long ago. We have very strong animal protection laws and Governor Pataki, though a Republican, strongly supports such legislation, as does my Republican representative in Congress, John Sweeney. He is often sponsor of the animal protection legislation that I ask all my representatives to support.

Thanks for your support, srpantalonas! I wish you victory in your bid for the Senate. With you in office, this kind of atrocity can finally be stopped. I just wish I could give you my vote. Good luck and a very warm welcome to DU!:toast:

if this guy is mennonite or amish? I doubt that these people would tolerate this sort of abuse to these animals.
I'm outraged about this since I have 2 rotties that I raised as babies and you know how they are "family".
I've also sent the link to the petition to everyone I know.
Please let us know the outcome of your petition and what is done about this guy!! He should be jailed!!!

From what I've read, this guy is Amish. Check the articles that I posted in my earlier reply. I agree that he should be in jail. If he lived in New York state, where I do, he would be. This state needs tougher animal protection laws. Subscribe to the ASPCA website or Fund for Animals. They are always sending me "actions" to participate in and have even called me to patch me through to the governor to ask him to sign into law animal protection bills that are on his desk. Governor Pataki may be a Republican, but he seems to advocate for animals.

I would hope that they had shut down this miserable excuse for a kennel by now, but this guy has had numerous chances over the YEARS to clean up his act, which you will know by the news links I posted in the beginning, and things have just gone from bad to worse for these poor dogs. The good news is that I recently adopted a dog from a truly horrible place and she is safe. I keep thinking she must have been someone's beloved pet as she is perfectly at home and comfortable on my couch and loves everyone she meets. That's the hard thing; I will never know.

I agree with you. My beloved cocker spaniel was a stud dog at a "puppy mill." When he got too old, they were just going to euthanize him because he could no longer make any money for them. Fortunately, he was rescued, and found his way to me. So this is an issue that is very close to my heart. Welcome to DU, Spock_is_Skeptical! You will find yourself in good company here!:toast:

From the dogs and me. I have two rescue dogs, myself, not my first, and my heart breaks for the horror stories I have heard. Both my guys, Meneken and Sara, cheated death, so thank you so much for your support of their compatriots.

Can we post in our States Forum about Intro's pending?

There is an intro in NY City that will help dog and cat owners get another animal once t heir animal dies. It will also help those over age 65 to have a pet, even in a "no pet" apartment house.

Do you know? I don't want to break rules. :)

102. Done...this issue is
very important to me; in 2002, I brought home a darling terrier puppy from a local breeder. Unfortunately, I now believe the woman I purchased her from is running a puppy mill (too many different breeds of dogs, not very sanitary conditions, etc.) She died at 12 weeks old of kidney failure, something I attribute to poor breeding. Had I known then what I know now, I would have never bought a dog from her. IMO, it's so important that more people are aware of what puppy mills and backyard breeders really are so they can avoid potential heart break by buying from a reputable family.

103. I have certainly heard about this. I understand and sympathize
My co-worker had this same problem and her heart was broken when she lost her puppy, under similar circumstances. And many puppies from these despicable places are sold to pet shops, who charge incredible high prices for unhealthy little puppies.;(

My Samantha, who I adopted at age eight, from rescue, had been a pet shop dog. She was adorable and had such a sweet temperament, but had all the possible cocker spaniel problems, which neither my previous cocker, or my other cocker had. This was the reason that she had been given up, after eight years, from the people who had adopted her, as a puppy, and it broke my heart. My Sam had seizures, ear and eye problems, skin problems and the medication that she was on for all this caused side effects. My friend in animal rescue, who placed her with me, offered to take her back, but someone had to care for this dog, and I already loved her. When I adopt a pet, it is for life.:-)

My vet finally put her on an anticonvulsant, after unsuccessfully trying to control her seizures with diet. I, eventually, lost her to liver failure because of long-time side effects of the anticonvulsant. I wish that I had known, at the time, that alternative treatments were available. I am so sorry for your experience, since I can identify. I have subsequently adopted three other dogs from rescue, since losing my Sammy, and know that I am taking my chances, but, for me, this is the only way to go. I look for dogs who need me.

104. I am so sorry. I now have two terriers, whose photos are on this thread
They really are adorable. It is also important to avoid pet stores, since they purchase from puppy mills. My breed is cockers. I have had four, in my life, three of whom were rescue. All were healthy and had none of the traditional cocker problems, except my little Samantha, who had been a pet shop dog. She had them all, problems with ears, eyes, skin, and she had seizures. I also lost her, due to kidney failure, because of the anticonvulsant that she took for more than four years. I thought I had no choice in putting her on it, since her seizures were so severe and frequent. And I subsequently learned that this was the reason that her previous owners had given her up, after eight years! She was such a bright little spirit, such a lovable dog, despite her health problems, and I wish so much that I knew then what I know now. I eventually adopted another cocker, who I was totally freaked out to learn also had a history of seizures, but I then had internet access, so researched her condition, and had found a vet who offered alternative treatments. This made a huge difference.:-(

121. Support Sen. Rick Santorum !
This is not a joke, he's got the cojones:

Senator Santorum Introduces Legislation to Protect Pets
Legislation will help end puppy mill abuse

May 26, 2005 - For Immediate Release
Contact: Christine Shott (202) 224-0610

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today introduced the Pet Animal Welfare Statute (PAWS) in the Senate to address the lack of regulatory oversight that has allowed some in the pet industry to operate below the acceptable care standards for pets. Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) is an original cosponsor of the legislation.

Wholesale dog and cat breeding facilities are licensed to operate by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and are required to comply with the rules and regulations of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) which sets forth standards for humane handling and treatment of animals. However, under current law only breeders and others who sell animals at wholesale are regulated, allowing some clearly commercial breeders and brokers to avoid regulation by selling directly to the consumer. The USDA has very limited ability to oversee the care and condition of animals in these facilities.

PAWS calls for regulation of large commercial breeders who sell directly to the public and does not affect hobby breeders or dog and cat fanciers. The legislation would require a USDA license for breeders who breed seven or more litters of dogs or cats per year. In addition, this broad ranging legislation would cover importers, Internet sellers and other non-breeder dealers who sell more than 25 dogs or cats per year, strengthen USDA's enforcement authority, and assure USDA access to source records of persons who acquire dogs for resale. Finally, PAWS expands the USDA's authority to seek injunctions against unlicensed dog and cat dealers.

“As the proud owner of a two-year-old German Shepard named Schatzie, it is disturbing to see the number of breeders who are careless in their responsibilities of breeding dogs in a healthy and humane environment,” said Senator Santorum. “Breeding and raising dogs without respect to the animal's welfare guarantees bad results for the unknowing owner, and for the health of the dog and her puppies.

In an effort to provide the proper care and treatment of animals in commercial breeding facilities, Senator Santorum introduced the Puppy Protection Act in the 107th Congress, which was passed by the Senate and included in the 2002 Farm bill, but was removed from the Farm bill before final passage. The bill called for the enforcement of existing standards for the health maintenance and well being of animals in commercial dog breeding facilities, ensuring that puppies have a safe and disease-free life.

Senator Santorum is a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Research, Nutrition and General Legislation, which has jurisdiction over this issue.

“I look forward to working with Chairman Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) and my other colleagues on the Senate Agriculture Committee to take swift action on this important bill,” said Senator Santorum.

150. Thanks! Damn good question. But, if you read one of my first replies,
To someone who asked to be directed to news articles on this, apparently this guy has been in and out of trouble for years. I asked the friend who sent this to me for an update, but I'll ask her again. The fact that this petition is still viable, after all this time, is not a good sign. Apparently animal protection laws need to be strengthened in Pennsylvania. We have pretty tough laws here in NY State and this guy would have been shut down and brought up on charges long ago.:grr:

So glad to find this petition. Unfortunately, this isn't the only
puppy mill in Lancaster County. I wish they all could be closed
down. Seems to be quite a profitable business here. :evilfrown:

151. Thank you so much, ancient_nomad!!!
And I agree. I learned, after researching this case and posting this petition, that the Amish are often known for animal cruelty. Who would have imagined?!;(

152. Used to live there...signed!
This kind of animal abuse has been going on there for a looong time.

Is it the bible belt thing that they are just "dumb animals" or what. I was always appalled at how the Amish treated thier horses. Living among them in the country , I got to see what the tourists didn't.
:grr:

I always said that if there is reincarnation, am Amishman should come back as a horse- owned by an Amishman!

154. Is this one of the Amish puppy mills?
There have been several found and they get away with it as part of the religion.

155. Pa. resident and dog lover
As a Pa. resident and dog lover I thank you. We are lucky to have a Governor (Ed Rendell)in Pa. who strongly supports the anti- puppy mill legislation. Governor Rendell has two Golden Retrievers Mandy and Ginger that mean the world to him. He left a group of VIP'S at an event at the Governor's mansion to come and join me playing with the dogs.
