Any plans to protest the inauguration?
I want to let the rest of the word know that this president doesn't represent my values.

25. organize a simple vigil in your town
Vigils are the easiest thing to organize.

Choose a symbolic building -- courthouse, city office building, whatever makes sense in your town.

Spread the word. Tell friends, church groups, civic groups, your sphere of friends, the press, fliers in coffeehouses. You can do as much or as little of this as you feel up to doing. The best thing about a vigil is that just a few people can make a very wonderful statement of resistance.

Ask people to dress in black, bring a candle (or you'll provide) and stand in silent remembrance of ... the death of democracy? whatever. Set a start and end time.

You should bring: 1) a bunch of candles, 2) cups to keep them lit in the wind, and 3) something to light the candles. Other creature comforts that you can provide are nice, not necessary.

And then, let it happen. It will be exceptionally meaningful for you, no matter how many others come. And you may be very surprised by the number of others in your town who want to say -- I DISSENT!

6. I'M IN
Guess this is where I should have gone in the first place. I've been asking this question at so many other forums!

I live in Sarasota, Florida and I would MOST definitely come to D.C. to PROTEST! No I'm not rich, live on DISABILITY and my mother-in-law lives with us. She has Alzheimer's and has been with us going on 6 years. We manage, but my husband said he would support me and wants me to go if a protest could be activated. Let's do this!!

The election was sooooooo Rigged and Katherine Harris is once again my Congressperson! YUK! I was a foot soldier during the campaign and I'm still hearing from people who are in shock! Sarasota was looking so good for Kerry! We had GREAT response... but we got robbed.

How do we get this info to FLOAT????

11. Which group organized the big protest in NYC during the
RNC convention? We should email them and see if they have plans. Then each of us should contact anti-war groups who have protested in our home towns and see what they have going. Then we need to get the word out, make the protest as massive as possible.

54. bring a homemade "Twin Towers" to the protest
protesting the inaug is an excellent idea. Dressing in black is hysterical. Haha.

How come no one ever builds big cardboard models of the world trade center at these protests, though? seems the towers should lead the way. Plus it would remind everyone Bush screwed them over. Just a thought :)

9. I have seen some post on this. I really think we need to do it.
We need to find a way to get organized. Maybe we could get a forum up only pertaining to this protest. (I do realize I am way too new to suggest formatting ideas) It seems we need to get sort of teams together. A group to blast the media about the protest, mercilessly. A group organizing time and travel. Maybe a group to research how the other million person walks went down. A group to organize the other groups. I don't know, but I definitly think this should get done.

Edited on Sat Nov-27-04 09:07 PM by radio4progressives
Whats the point in talking about demonstrating on inaugeration day, at this juncture?

We should be planning on huge wide scale demonstration, statewide, nation wide - protesting VOTERGATE. Come on folks!

Wake up out of your slumber folks. The elections were STOLEN AGAIN!

We need to be calling for NEW ELECTIONS. at least in Ohio, Flordia, Colorado, Oklahoma, Nevada, North Carolina, looks like Texas is questionable, Louisiana.

Take a page from the Ukrainians!

18. world wide (in burkas)
We need to ask the rest of the world to help us. Our own media is dead. We need worldwide visibility that is covered in the international press, because ours won't report it. It needs to be like the international day of protest against the Iraq War.

And we need a strong visual statement. Burkas does it for me. We need to make it clear we are now transitioning to a third world fundamentalist country of repression. There is no better symbol than the burka, imo, for that. And it will make striking photos, which is part of getting press coverage.

26. i actually have a burka
In the late 70s-early 80s, my husband bought me this really lovely top with pleats and a pretty open grid across the chest. Several years ago (before 9/11, though), I saw pix of Afghan women in burkas and suddenly realized it was a burka with an opening inserted.

A Made in Afghanistan authentic burka and, yeah, I'll be wearing it at a demonstration I'll help organize in Laramie, Wyoming.

I just signed up with ANSWER, www.Unity04.net and http://pdamerica.org/event/main-list.php. I'm also contacting as many organizations as I can. the Unity04 is a Black Organization and even though I'm white, I'll march hand and hand with them or anyone! El-Smirkle-Ray and his cohorts won't hold me back... let's Fight! I'll march anywhere. Unity is trying to do something BEFORE Dec. 15th when the Electoral College votes.

Also here in Saraota County our local Sarasota Memorial Hospital has been turning away patients who have no insurance. This is against the Federal Law! This is a County owned hospital and Katherine Harris has her fingers ALL over it!! They ARE NOT allowed to turn patients away!

If you're concerned... write Duncan Finlay at 1700 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34287 and complain about the fact that they have instrumented a "Diversion Program" for the last 8 weeks witch is illegal! This lady WAS NOT elected.... Florida is still in FLUX. I just saw JEB on TV this A.M. and they're STILL fielding questions about the Election!!
Thanks

a large turnout and throw a little snark at his "mandate" while not allowing his inauguration to upstage it or giving him "homeland security" excuses to disrupt it. Any idea if the international community who has been so verbal about their hate of this leader has anything like this in mind? I have no connections.. have never protested before : ) Feeling pretty inspired this week however.

Besides, if we don't do it before, we'll be sleeping on the Washington Mall and I think that would be pretty Cold. I live in Florida and I DON'T know what cold is! Today it's 81 degrees!

I'll post what I find out and hope others will as well. I couldn't STAND seeing they're faces before the election, now to think of FOUR MORE YEARS has me in a state of PANIC!

I have never been big into protests, but now I think the only way I can make my voice heard is by protesting. On the inauguration, I want the world to see that not only did we not vote for him, but we strongly disagree with the policies and actions of our president.

I am planning to caravan down to DC to protest, but it would be nice if everyone who couldn't planned a vigil or march in their home town. It would also be a good day for the freeway bloggers to get active.

I thought BartCop.com was planning something, but haven't heard ANYTHING! I don't think it's a good idea to go on Inauguration Day... We need to have a day of our OWN! I know there would be thousands and thousands attending if we could find the right venue!! I'll check out the ones mentioned above, but if anyone has more info, please post!

55. Planning must be done NOW in case sh*t hits the fan LATER,
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 04:00 PM by Kralizec
which a lot of people here would probably agree is not too far away. Look, all I want is to be prepared. If things go bad and we're caught with our pants down (like liberals usually are) then we must be ready to endure a generation of the gov't that has stolen our White House. Let's not be ill-prepared. Imagine, if the net went down, would you know what to do next?? Or would you sit around wondering when DU would come back up so you can post more?

Note: Please don't take this the wrong way. DU should NEVER stop doing what is has always done best. Just be prepared. Please.

56. International nonviolent protest
I posted this on another topic, but it's relevant to this topic as well. Here's a link to a description of a nonviolent protest and there's a petition there as well:

http://www.petitiononline.com/pray120/petition.html

This was inspired by the movie of Gandhi's life, in which he tells people to engage in a day of prayer and fasting to protest a new piece of legislation. They shut the entire country of India down. The idea is that on inauguration day, people shouldn't go to work or spend any money. Instead, they should pray and fast for peace and democracy.

Please help get the word out about this. People are encouraged to participate internationally as well as in the United States. It will be most effective if a lot of people know about it. Please tell everyone!

57. I Just Got A Message
from A.N.S.W.E.R. that they plan to Protest the Inauguration. Since this seems to be the ONLY National Protest going around I guess I'll HAVE to go there on THAT day!!

I don't happen to think this is the BEST day, however there doesn't seem to be anything else happening, unless someone else has more info!
Thanks

58. Wearing black is the answer!
As mentioned earlier. It's a simple way that people all over the world could protest on inauguration day. Large patches of black on the mall could make a pretty strong statement.

59. I Still Feel An Inauguration Day
March is NOT the BEST day! Since most of the Media has chosen to ignore our voice up until now, I feel they will only make us look silly by marching on that day.

Add that to the fact that many will say it's in BAD TASTE and could back-fire. I have no fear of any name calling, but just feel we won't be as effective UNLESS we march on another day. Karl Rove probably is looking forward to something on Inauguration Day and probably already has a strategy planned to debunk any protest. I want to go to a Protest and said I would go to any that is organized, but I've sort of "flip-flopped!" I just don't want to be there on THAT DAY!

Does anyone know anything else??

60. FYI about this year's security
As someone who was at the 2000 inauguration protests and has spent some time in DC jails, this year they're planning on having MUCH MUCH more security and most likely will be very intolerant of dissent.
Not that we shouldn't show up, but keep this in mind. There may be other creative non-violent ways to express ourselves than on the parade route?

61. WE OWE OURSELVES...
the right to have a MASSIVE PROTEST! My daughter and I have been going about with our own protests here where we live. Deep in Repuke country, and we are beginning to see some results.

Been putting notices everywhere and now when we go into stores like Target, Publix, Walmart and other places we have begun to notice that Republican books etc., have been removed from the shelves!! Security guards at malls have been on "high alert" and following people outside! I think some hairs are standing on edge. NOW is the TIME... let's March to D.C.!

62. small towns and suburbs could protest too
if need be (as i'm still holding my breath about this election until the fat lady ((cheney)) sings) people in any town could protest simply by going to their village hall on inaugration day, or a park in the downtown area, or any popular meeting place; dress in black ((mourning color)) and wear a black ribbon ((votor fraud)). we don't need to travel to washington or to our state capitol. our voices do not have to go unheard because we can't get off work for a few days or can't afford to travel anywhere. we can speak in unison in hundreds of protests across the country. alert the media, ban together, join with friends--get out of the house and into the street.

66. I think you are right.
Even small protests are good. And here is something I learned from the election; action feels good. I worked really hard pre-election registering voters and doing GOTV. Do I feel like my efforts were wasted because we lost? No. I feel confident that I did everything in my power to avert the tragedy of another four years of BushCo (not something I can say about 2000). No regrets here. Now I will spend the next four years protesting his policies. Loudly and often.

So all Blue Lights EVERYWHERE, and Black Ribbons. We are making signs to Protest downtown, so that will be it. Wearing black, with BLACK Ribbons, with perhaps a dribble of Red Paint to include Protesting Iraq!! Also will be making lots of smaller Black Bows to stick on things. Got NEW Bumper stickers on my car... beginning to get the finger AGAIN!

put your efforts into something now, to get a new election.

January will be nice , but totally futile.

Now is the time, if you want results.

70. Jan.= DIVERSION, to keep you away from rallys TODAY, that get NEW ELCTION
Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 06:06 AM by oscar111
Probably unintended, but focusing on a January rally has the effect of diverting you from rallys today, which have the potential to win

NEW ELECTIONS.

{see "sick-out" thread , this forum}\

Planners for Jan. probably sincere, but the effect is disaster.
{not freepers... just muddled thinkers}

You could be rallying TODAY, and influencing judges to grant new elections based on the fraud cases.
Judges DO look out the window at the street.

Instead, you are being led to think only of January, which is way too late to get new elections.

New elections will get us far more good government ,...than 4 years of complaining under Bush's power.

see "sick-out" thread, this forum, for coming weekend and friday.

73. I'm an organizer in DC for January 20
Hi DU...

DAWN, http://www.dawndc.net , had an organizing meeting today on our actions.

I just wanted to let you know that first of all, we have United for Peace and Justice's endorsement, and they are likely to be a big resource in helping us build.

Secondly,

We have need for lots of help on various aspects.

Since the permits are all in application, we won't know enough about location until a meeting with the Park Service on Thursday. However, right now, we are pushing for one of two locations for our mass rally.

It will either be at Dupont Circle (like 4 years ago), or it will be in Malcolm X Park (officially known as Meridian Hill Park). There will be a march, which will follow, that is likely to go down 16th Street.

As far as who will speak, etc., we have no idea. We know that the folk singer David Rovics will be performing. Beyond that, it's still a very early work in progress.

As for the die-in part of the action, for obvious reasons, much of that won't be public information. However, just know that there are two tiers of planning, one for people who will be involved in a higher risk action, others in a somewhat lower risk, but more mass provocative action. There is preliminary planning of where that will be. It will be publicly announced; we want people to know the symbolism, and why we believe we need to make this kind of stand in this way.

We continue to meet, but we also need donations and support. This is a big project. If you can help us out, either with your time, or with your resources, either is appreciated. You can send an email to info@dawndc.net. You can also find out how to donate at http://www.dawndc.net/events/j20_05/donate.php

If you have any more questions, please share them. We need your help and solidarity. Just know that there is planning in earnest, that it's being done with community input, and that unlike some protests that ANSWER has organized, this is truly a more democratic, open, transparent, grassroots effort.

Peace to you all,
Jim Macdonald

74. Black Protest Wristbands
http://www.nationdivided.com

to order via ebay, or

http://www.ididnotvote4bush.com

for mail order instructions.

Thousands have been sold in the U.S. and abroad. Join the Movement!

In stock and ready to ship.

Black protest silicone wristband, like Livestrong, that says, "I Did Not Vote 4 Bush" Stickers also.

Inexpensive, and a significant portion of the proceeds will be donated to progressive organizations.

A must for international travel. A must for inauguration day. Essential for the next four years.

Keep up the reminder that about 49% of us do not support the policies of the Bush Administration, and about 49% of us are not so dumb!

For those wanting to get close to do the "turn your back on Bush" protest, write to your Senators and Congressmen/women to ask for tickets to the swearing in ceremony. There may still be tickets available in some states and they are FREE to constituents. Here is a link with more info.

and staying over for a day or so to "check out" PDA.

The security along the parade route will be a draconian police state exhibition of power. It is my understanding that there will be security checkpoints that ALL parade attendees will have to pass. NOTHING obvious will get through (signs, posters, etc.).

Orange of Black Balloons (uninflated) may pass a pat down. They could be inflated inside the "ring of steel." I'm thinking those BIG balloons that have the rubber band attached like a toy punching bag.
Bunches of those would be impossible to ignore.

A party for regular elitists
The president throws a $40 million celebration

Like frat brothers engaged in an endless belching contest, America's top two presidential candidates spent most of 2004 trying to out-guy each other. Their goal: winning the hearts and votes of ordinary Americans. Dedicated indoorsman John Kerry shot a goose in Michigan. Armchair daredevil George W. Bush resuscitated his love of NASCAR and attended a race for the first time since the last time he was running for president. Kerry posed with a cheesesteak in Philadelphia. Bush fondled a football in Cleveland.
