DU drummers/funk fans
What is a good album/artist to listen to to get a good feel for general funk drumming?

I took years of lessons and got plenty of jazz but the only funk I learned was basically ostinatos on the 2 and 4.

So what would you guys reccomend for some good complex funk in general? I was thinking of picking up a Jamees Brown album but not sure which, if at all.

1. Well I learned funk
First from James Brown (soul is the root of funk kinda to me) I also think RATM has good funk beats, I lean toward jazzfunk a little more I dig those grooves:shrug:

2.  I think RATM's funk

was from Zach and Tom... b/c the drummer isn't that good and the beats are pretty much only rock. I think basically the rhythm section in that band was filler, b/c Zach and Tom did it all.

Good suggestion, though. I can sing and play guitar but those guy are nuts. It's blasphemy that that duo broke up... but Cornell is nuts as far as singing go.

Viva la RATM. At least they provided many of my generation with the correct definition of Evil Empire.

4. I would suggest the following -
Starks and Stubblefield in massive quantities. Get as much James Brown as you can. It wouldn't hurt you to get some New Orleans style second-line Jazz stuff either. Study the clave, from which all that Afro-Cuban stuff springs.

And check out this site for a lot of good info:

tear it up, funk soul brother...

and the link, poster I replied to. Bookmarked it to view tommorow when I wake up at 8p, (if I'm lucky).

on edit: My drum teacher was nazi about Jazz drumming. He gave me a different measurement for each limb tp hold over the skin/metal and enforced it with a ruler. To this day I cannot play accent-less rock right b/c of my training.

I'd almost say my drumming is unbalanced b/c of the over-statement on technique.
