I'd rather be on DU than practice piano, what should liberalhistorian do?

As you guys probably know, I'm liberalhistorian's son and I just started posting a couple of weeks ago. I've got DU fever! My mom wants me to practice my piano now and I'd rather be on here. She says she'll listen to what you guys have to say about it, so what should she do? :evilgrin:

I didn't have access to a piano while I was in England because I was so broke and only managed to get a keyboard toward the end of my time there. I'm so rusty now on the piano that it's frustrating; I can't even get through half of Clair de Lune without messing up whereas I used to be able to play it without thinking about it 2 years ago.

Get thee off of DU and tickle those ivories!

During my five years in commercial radio, I lost not one, not two, but three jobs because the stations replaced their live local announcers either with automation or a network feed. And I never made more than $6.00 an hour!

But, I'm kind of biased, since I'm a mom, too. You should have well rounded interests, and not just have one thing to fill your life.

next to the keyboard. Then you could have the best of both worlds.

Incidentally, you should be proud to have a thoughtful, caring mother who wants you to learn piano. If a teenager, that will probably induce a gag response, but you'll remember it a few years down the road.

Seriously, move the piano. It can't be more than, what 500 -600 pounds? Get Mom to help if it is too much for you alone!

Anyone who can play the piano can touch virtually any instrument with just a little practice, including the guitar. They're not cheap, but when you get one, playing them on a piano is the best way to learn the notes. I'd even suggest every musician out there get a good feel of the piano.

or you can get one of those nifty keyboards. Set it to "piano," and play on!

I need to get back to my guitar myself... I quit it since 12th grade and now my Ibanez (accoustic) is just sitting there in my closet, barely played except to experiment....

With any musical instrument, loving what you are doing is the key to mastering it.

Also try to pay attention to what part is learning the music and what part is learning the fingering or MECHANICS of playing piano..the music part requires your attention...the fingering part...you can think of other things like your next DU post :evilgrin:

There is no hard fast rule that practice needs to be one hour...go back and forth between the two to make yourself happy...and remember...the monotony of practicing today will be rewarding later when you have it all down later on....

25. I've combined the two.

I'm much older than you, and my interests in classical piano are purely for my own pleasure. I have a digital Roland F-3P which has an excellent touch and sound. I've built a cantelever shelf at lap level for the Roland, and above it (5") and 10" recessed I've built another shelf that holds my notebook Toshiba and modem with which I log on to DU.

I also use the notebook computer to run several excellent MIDI composer programs which I use as a learning aid for the piano pieces I am working on. Having the computer display the score, and the ability to close loop segments for repititous playback helps with my timing. There is also a metronome function in all midi programs.

Sometimes, I combine DU with finger excercises or stream Air America lightly in the background while working on memory exercises. I find the combination of the two to be mostly compatible, but I also spend some practice time exclusively purely on the piano with NO DISTRACTIONS.

PS: If you ever play in public, there will be ALOT of distractions.

I don't think my mother would have approved of this setup, but it works for me. Like I said, I play only for my own amusement, and improvement is measured only by my own happiness. If I had ambitions for a competitive or commercial future, I would develop a more disciplined approach.

I was working on a Chopin prelude in between posts.

When I got home from work on Thursday, I had a phone message from a place where I had put in an employment application two days before. I tried to get back to them yesterday morning, but they must've been closed for Good Friday. Needless to say, I'll be back on the phone to that place the first thing Monday morning!

slack the past couple of days; he was supposed to practice but didn't, so it was time to play tough mom! I let him be on DU for an hour, now he's practicing. Hey, his lessons are costing me sixty bucks a month and he takes drum lessons, too, so I want my money's worth!

That's great about the employment call, Dean! What place was it? What would you be doing?

Regarding the employment call: it was from an outfit that delivers uniforms all over the state. My soon-to-be ex-boss' son works there as a driver, and asked his son to put in a good word for me.

If I do get in there, I'll finally be back to working regular daytime hours and a Monday-Friday week. And it's a union shop (Teamsters), so I'm guessing it pays pretty well.

You know what? Losing my job may turn out to be a blessing in disguise! :shrug:
