What's The Best Concert You've Seen?
Rock, country, whatever...

I've seen a lot of concerts in my day, so it's hard to pick just one. The one that stands out is John Mellencamp. The guy never stops. His band might take a break, but he doesn't.

"The healing show" followed up the incident at Deer Creek IN where people tore down the fence and stormed the show, and the previous night when some of my brothers and sisters were killed in a structural collapse.
I'll never forget Jerry singing Stella Blue...still brings a tear to my eye.

I was there too. Up from Springfield, MO. Had been to Deer Creek too.

Wondered if GD would come up some time while we were both on.

Keep after it.

Did the security breach ruin everything? I tell ya, the security at the St. Louis show was PARANOID. Really ticked me off how they were acting.

8. Tool..
At the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. Oct 24, 1996. Here's a review from their page. (not by me, though)

"From: "Kevin M. Kirk" (kevink@xact.com)
Subject: Tour Review: Seattle/Tacoma

I attended the Seattle show (actually it was in Tacoma) at the
University of Puget Sound's Field House (a gym of all places). I have
to say that it was well worth the 650 round trip miles I drove to see
them . . .

As far as "rock" shows go, it was the best show I've been to in a long,
long time. The sound was spectacular: it was crisp, it was clean, not
"ear bleeding" loud, and you could understand everything MJK said. They
played a good balance of songs from both Undertow and AEnema and tossed
in a splash of Opiate for good measure. Also, each song was performed
exactly the way they were on the record. Every cymbal, note and sound
effect were precisely where they belonged. This is something very few
bands can achieve and in a world full of bands that absolutely suck
live, it's good to know that there are still truly gifted artists (and
sound engineers) lurking about the masses.

All in all, Tool is an amazing band on stage as well as in the studio.
GO SEE THEM! For those of you you who truly appreciate music, it will
be an experience you will never forget.

Kevin - Spokane, Washington"

85. tool was the first band that popped into my head also
What an awesome show I saw at New Haven Coliseum during their last tour. It was the last music show the Colseum had before shutting down to get torn down. I didn't even own and wasn't all that familiar with the band at the time I saw them either. I was blown away and I am not even sure if the show I saw would be considered one of their good shows. I know is was outstanding for me.

that being said, I have been to so many good concerts I am not sure if I could for sure pick out one favorite. The Tool concert would be a definite contender for top position.

Man I couldn't get anyone to go with me .
so I hopped on bart alone and had a blast
hooked up with a nice person on bart who was
going alone too we ended staying together the whole
day .

I handed out queensryche Lyrics flyers from Operation
Mindcrime and added at the end "vote bush out" and
"Rock the Vote" I made them myself and made 200 copies
and handed them out at the various Rock Conserts I went
too. Lollopalooza , Maiden , Metallica etc...

I think I was 22 at the time.. It was my act of activism.

It was a great day at the memorial .

shoot I was probably concieved after a BillGraham

23. TIE: Rundgren, Keneally, Brooks, Z
Two Rundgren shows stick out in my mind...the recent trio tour, and a recent solo show. Amazing performances by a true innovator. I'm going to see him at the end of this month, and the reviews of the first night make it sound like it's going to top the above two.

Mike Keneally - Former Zappa and Vai guitarist. Probably the legendary 10/25/98 show in Philadelphia, but every time I've seen him was amazing.

Garth Brooks - Don't know what the tour was, but the man puts on a hell of a show. He started the show by rising out of a grand piano body, had his drummer in a plexiglass spaceship looking thing, confetti cannons, the works. The music never suffered, though. Modern country's really not my favorite, but I enjoy his work.

Z - Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa's band, with the above-mentioned Keneally, Bryan Beller and Joe Travers (former Duran Duran drummer). Probably the most whacked-out show I've ever seen, but they used to do a 40-minute (truncated to 20 at this show) "rock medley" that consisted of bits and pieces of hundreds of classic rock tunes smashed together, with razor-sharp transitions coming in the middle of measures, with some songs only represented with one measure or less. An amazing band, now defunct due to bad planning and laziness.

58. Rundgren and Patti Smith
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 09:06 PM by darkstar
Rundgren w/ Utopia in '75 in St. Louis. Prog rock, candy pop, power pop, Philly soul. Pretty phenomenal. And I'm more excited about this tour too. More so than in many a year. (But now that I think about it, it's been many a year now since I saw TR.)

Patti Smith twice. Circa '80 in Kansas City at One Block West. Then again in SF at Fillmore in 2000. Most magnetic, swaggeringly charismatic rock figure I've ever seen live. To me, twice 2 decades aprt--the only 2 I've seen--confirmed it was not a fluke.

26. I've seen many, too. Bruce Springsteen & "E" Street Band
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 07:52 PM by holyrollerdem
On edit: I just saw someone else who saw him! It was the same tour. He played at least 3 hours and was the best and clearest concert I ever went to see. I didn't particularly like him before the concert but after the concert he couldn't be beat! The "E" Street band was what helped make him great!

I've seen Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, & Charlie Watts at a MS benefit concert in L.A. around '82 and it was good but I still liked Bruce better. Some others I've seen include the US Festival in California around '82 with Judas Priest, Van Halen, Ozzy Ozbourne and some others. It was pretty good and it was outside (3 days) but it was so hot and I almost died of dehydration and everyone had squirt bottles full of water spraying on everyone all day and then I almost got crushed trying to get on a bus to go to the parking lot which was 13 miles away. The concert wasn't worth all that though.

Also saw Rush 2x, Supertramp, Rolling Stones, Jefferson Starship, Van Halen 2x, Krokus, Blackfoot, Pat Raverse Band, Ted Nugent, Billy Squier, Styx, Foreigner, Little River Band, Marshall Tucker Band, Loverboy 2x, Huey Lewis and the News, Village People, and many others I probably don't remember but thought I would for the rest of my life.....and who said born-again Christians can't rock???!!! lol

Oh yeah! My first concert was at 12 and my friend's parents dropped us off at a Kiss & AC/DC concert!

36. Did Springsteen...
do his fake collapsing act?

A friend of mine saw him, and he said that Springsteen collapsed. They brought the houselights up while people mingled around with concerned looks on their faces. They brought out a gurney; placed the Boss on it; and started offstage. All of a sudden, a hand shot out from beneath the blanket and grabbed a piano leg. Springsteen jumped off the gurney; grabbed his guitar; and ran to the mike. He growled into the mike, "I ain't through rockin' yet!!!" My friend said that the crowd went wild, and Springsteen played another two hours.

71. I seen my share as well, and I'll vote for Bruce and the boys . . .
saw him three times . . . once before anyone had heard of him, then at the opening show of the Born To Run tour (when he made the covers of Time and Newsweek the same week), and then on the Born In The USA tour . . . each show was better than the last, so my favorite was the Born In The USA show . . . well over 3 hours, tremendous energy, an acoustic set that emphasized the Nebraska album, and Bruce kissing Clarence on the lips . . . :)

my second favorite was probably the Stones in Madison Square Garden . . . the opening act was Stevie Wonder, one of his first performances following his accident . . . what a revelation THAT was . . .

honorable mention to the Byrds (second generation, after Jim had become Roger) . . . and to John Mayall (the concert at the Fillmore East that became the Turning Point album) . . .

40. Carlos Santana but it's a tough pick
saw so many. Some people may think some of the bands I saw we're that good-like the Smoking Grooves tour with Cypress Hill and Wyclef-but that rocked as well.

During Cypress Hill's act-a women in the audience was smoking weed out of a bong. B-Real asked the girl if he could have a hit so the girl handed him the bong but during the exchange B-Real dropped the bong and it shattered all over the floor. So B-Real, who was really upset and kept saying sorry, went backstage. A few minutes later he came back with a big ziploc back full of weed and gave it to the girl.

You know that weed was some good shit.True story it happened a few years back at the Meadows Music Center in Hartford, CT.

47. Santana, very closely followed by Zappa
Both at Northern Illinois University in the early 70's. Carlos came out for his last encore clad all in white, white guitar and played Samba Pa Ti. I still get chills when I hear that tune.

Zappa's band was incredibly tight. This was just before Abostrophe and just after Overnight Sensation. He played for over 3 hours and the smoke was THICK!

till 1978. He still rocked when I saw him a few years ago!

54. I forgot to mention for that last encore
The lights were all down except for a single blue spot on Carlos. The beautifully mellow Samba Pa Ti after the highly energetic concert was just such a fitting end.

Carlos still rocks, but I am happy to have seen him in his prime. I just wish I hadn't killed so many brain cells in that era so I could remember more vividly.

48. Chicago in Toronto
Not a geographical mix-up. In 1977, I think, just a few weeks before lead singer Terry Kath killed himself.

Amazing empathy between band and audience.

Also Santana in Sydney in 1974. Marijuana thick as smog in the air, everyone stoned out of their tiny gourds whether they wanted to be or not. Mind blowing.

57. Big show...The Wall in Berlin
But don't believe the shit on the DVD--they didn't play "The Thin Ice" at the concert because someone got stupid and had one stage electrical system. You'd think they'd run redundant lines for a big show like that. No problem, though; that is the song I like the least.

Medium size show: Kiss in Nashville in 1983. They played for a couple of hours, then Paul Stanley went to the mic and said something like "it's time to go, it's late, you've got lots of things to do tomorrow...on second thought, fuck what you've got to do tomorrow." And played for another hour or so.

Small show: UDO at the Metropol in Berlin. It's a German rock band whose lead singer's former band Accept had a small following in the states. In Germany he's lots more fun.

62. I remember Joni Mitchell screwing up her entrance,
and the show being stopped for five minutes or so while they rewound all the video, light, and sound cues to do the song again.

I wasn't there, but I listened live on the radio, and the radio announcer was pretty good at being honest about what happened (though to my credit, I said to myself, "Hey - she didn't come in" a few moments before they stopped the show...)

Of course, the CD version doesn't include the flub, but it was a hell of a performance. I wish I had been there.

63. Toss up between Floyd and Zappa
Floyd, of the concerts I saw, Momentary lapse of reason at the Toronto Blue Jay Stadium (can't remember the name of it) was a phenomenal show, and the woman who sang "The Big Gig In The Sky" nailed it - totally nailed it - better than I've heard it performed in the other shows I saw.

And Zappa, let's be honest, was like watching God himself on stage. Incredible musicianship. I'm sad that I only got to see him once, in 1984.

But Floyd - man, Floyd is so on another plane of concert existence, no one can touch them for pure HUGENESS of sound, video, lighting, fog, everything. Totally over the top, but not a tasteless over the top like Pamela Anderson. Truly phenomenal shows they put on.

And I also want to say that Rush always put on a hell of a good show, and so did Genesis. Even in their shitty later years when the music sucked, they still played like pure perfection.

65. A few come to mind....
This is a tough one. I attended many concerts in my younger days and there's a handful that really, really stand out for one reason or another...

Paul McCartney in 1986.
Bruce Springsteen in 1983.
Billy Joel in 1982.

Each one of the above just stood out for reasons of performance, showmanship, the perfect combination of studio sound v. live sound, etc...

Probably too pop-oriented for most of you, but these are my favorite contemporary singer/songwriters and their concerts not only met my expectations, but sent them to a new level...

66. Puff Daddy & the Family 1998 Fleet Center
I hated it but had a good time.

Mase, Puff, Lil' Kim and Busta Rhymes plus a few more who only said F..k

I stupidly volunteered to escort my daughter and 4 other 14 year old surburban girls to the most vulgar night of my life.

After the first few "songs" I made my way to outside the Fleets box level and a nice sofa away from the noise.

76. Santana, at the Greek Theater in Berkeley-outdoors, the Golden Gate Bridge
Edited on Sat Apr-10-04 02:23 AM by Zinfandel
in plain view--as the fog slowly rolls through the GG, on a warm Autumn day (Oct. 5th 1996). On the hill in the back, I'm with a gorgeous redhead, holding her and swaying, while Santana is playing hot, sexy, bluesy, instrumentals, all afternoon for the home crowd, a crowd of about 4000 (not his fucking "hits") and he just kept playing...into the night.

I've been to a lot of shows, but this one stands out and kicked ass!!!

I've seen a few. King Crimson(3 times 74'-03') & Captain Beafheart & the Magic Band in Georgetown in 78'. The Pink Floyd dark Side of the Moon show was also outstanding. And then there was Zappa with his Grand Wazoo band at the DAR in DC. & so on.

84. Waylon By God Jennings, Little Rock, late 70's
The band was absolutely thundering. Tighter than a camel's ass in a sandstorm. About a 1.5 second break between songs, each of which was better than the one before.

Waylon said exactly three words to the audience: "Y'all cool it." And that was when a pair of lace panties flew out of the audience and landed on the neck of his Telecaster.

We'll not see the likes of him again!

90. U2 at the United Center in Chicago
Part of it was the circumstances. It was in November, just after 9/11.

I had my dream job, head writer for Second City Communications. That's the "custom comedy" wing of Chicago's Second City. After 9/11, business dropped off and they decided to dissolve the full time writing staff.

After they told us my wife had, between the time I told her and the time I got home, purchased tickets for the show the following night. Not just tickets. The best tickets I've ever had for a stadium show. We were about fifty feet from the ramp that went out into the audience.

The show was like going to church. I left with all of my defeat wiped away, replaced by optimism. I can't really explain it, but I go back to that night quite a bit.
