Hey young hipsters: Which White Stripes album should I get
I haven't been paying attention to new music the last few years, but have heard a couple of their songs and like them. Please help an aging rocker.

7. Gave last night over to "Parsifal"...
The whole thing. So I'm Wagnered out for the moment. But okay then, what's your favorite recording of the complete "Ring."? I have bits and pieces but have been meaning to get the whole thing all at once.

Of all the hundreds of classical recordings I have, I'll admit I have no Grieg. What should I start with?

11. The Peer Gynt Suites are a good starting point.
I have a hard time telling people what to buy because I inheirited my records from my grandparents. My rule of thumb is listening to the old stuff and if it's good I get a CD maybe, or at least record it to tape. I would suggest that you either listen to some cheap records you can find or that you listen to some midi files www.classicalmidiconnection.com is a good source for them. Listen around and see what you like. As far as music of Grieg's that I like, the Arietta is lovely but too short, the piano concerto in A minor is also very good. If you want to hear some singing in Norwegian you should check out the song Jeg Elskar Dig. I have yet to see a recording of the hymn "Who is this host (alternately Behold a host) arrayed in white" which is an arrangement of a folk song by Grieg. In short my answer is: I don't know what you should buy, just look around.

6. White Blood Cells
$10,000 to produce. Brother singing and playing guitar, Sister drumming. No Bass. What's not to like?

Then again, I'm an old fart, so you probably weren't asking for my opinion. =)

15. They're not brother & sister
They're ex-wife/ex-husband. Take it from an ex-Detroiter who still keeps in contact with her friends in the music scene. That whole brother sister thing was all a joke. Jack has now moved on to Renee Zellwegger, who seems to enjoy hanging out at certain Detroit area bars incognito. A couple of my friends enjoyed a drink with her & Jack a couple of weeks ago and said she was a lovely girl. :-)

10. Peel Sessions
Go to this official site for free downloads of songs you can't get in stores. Automatically cooler than any of the albums.

13. 'Marquee Moon' by Television and 'Underwater Moonlight' by the Soft Boys
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 04:12 PM by jpgray
Two bands in the same general late 70s guitar pop/punk vein as the Stripes with loads more talent and songwriting ability. The best WS album in my view is 'Elephant', but while it is catchy, I would rather have either of the above albums. Luckily, one of your pals is bound to own Elephant, so you can mooch. :)
