NYC Duers - who's up for an Easter afternoon Dim Sum eat-fest?
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 12:58 PM by Rabrrrrrr
With Pagerbear and me?

I'm thinking 2:30 pm, and I know a great dim sum place in Chinatown on Mott Street, but I can't remember the name or the address, so I'll find out what it is and let people know.

But sign in here if you're up for it!

PagerBear - does 2:30 pm work for you? It's the earliest I can do, but I know you have two services in CT to do.

1. Is that the Nam Wah Tea House?
Used to go there all the time. Loved the place.

But, I probably have to work Sunday.

3. I dno't think that's the name - it's not a tea house
Just a wonderfully authentic anc cheap bare-bones Chinese restaurant with incredible food. :-)

6. Nam Wah isn't a teahouse either...
just the best dimsum outside of Beijing.

7. Well, then, it's possible that's where it is
:-)

I've been going to this restaurant for years and only know it by sight. I've never actually bothered to look at the name. Only restaurant I frequent for which I never learned the name.

2. The time is just fine, but does it have to be dim sum?
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 01:19 PM by pagerbear
Not that I object to dim sum, mind you. Some of my best friends eat dim sum! I haven't a prejudiced bone in my body as far as food goes!

9. If you're sure you're okay with dim sum,
I'd rather keep it at that - I'm itching for dumplings and roast duck, and also it precludes the usual end-of-dinner "who owes what" nightmare that I hate, especially in larger groups. Nice and easy division of the bill into equal portions, just as the food was divvied up equally. :-)

Yum!

19. I recommend
Harmony Garden, about half a block north of canal on mott st. it's on the east side of the street, and has a big green awning.

best most authentic dim sum in chinatown, in my half-cantonese opinion, and super cheap. you'll be stuffed easily for under $10 each.

20. if it's nyc and dim sum, you MUST go to Golden Unicorn
...on East Broadway. No substitute.

Would love to join, but have to do the 'Jesus thing' with in-laws.

More white people than Chinese, avoid like plague. ESPECIALLY if it's in Chinatown!

23. good to hear some agreement on this!
nothing against golden unicorn...i've just never been that enamored with it, and because it's the highest rated chinese restaurant in Zagats, it attracts a very, well...non-chinese...crowd.

24. Okay, I have the restaurant - Mandarin Court, 61 Mott Street
It's called Mandarin Court, and it's at 61 Mott Street. half a block south of Canal Street, just a few doors down from Ten Ren Tea.

Please confirm if you will come, and we can start PMing cell phone numbers back and forth. I don't want to do this unless I have firm commitments from people, because I don't want to show up there and end up eating alone. :-)

So let me know, and if there is still an issue about the restaurant, I am flexible to go elsewhere and we can debate amongst those who are committed to eating a meal together. But I'm not gonna debate restaurants with people who aren't willing to commit to dining together.

Hoping for a few good people! Chime in.

26. Yep, 2:30 pm.
Let's meet outside. I'll figure out something that is quite obvious as a marker, and post it later in this thread. I'd bring a DU bumpersticker, but it's stuck to my laptop. Maybe I'll make a sign.

Let me think on it. ;-)

39. OK, I'm in...
but there's still a small chance I'll have to work.

Small chance, but a chance. I'm on call, but nothing should be happening tomorrow.

(Just hope the tunnel traffic isn't a killer-- I'd usually take the train, but it's a long story why I need the car, being on call and all)

41. Hehheh - no, my usual boring (though I find it exciting) Saturday
evening of hanging out at the lincoln center B&N until it closes, reading books and drinking coffee for 5 or so hours, and then taking a slow walk home (actually, I only walk up to 116th street, and take the subway the last few blocks, because I don't like broadway late at night between 125 and 135 - lots of unlit areas, etc.).

Tonight, I didn't take the walk though, since I walked TO B&N. :-)

42. Okey dokey - I've PMed everyone with my cell phone number,
and I have some of yours, so we should be all set!

If anyone is planning to go, you have until tomorrow morning to let me know, or else show up at the restaurant at 2:30. But remember, if we don't know you're coming and you are late, we'll be heading inside and will be eating, and you may very well have no space at the table with us. Just a warning!
