My MS Internet Explorer has been hijacked.
By a website called The Huns Yellow pages. I don't know what it is but I guess it's a porn site. When I pull up an IE Window and walk away for a minute then come back I will end up with a dozen windows or more with The Huns Yellow Pages on it. IE has been rendered pretty much unusable right now.

My friends at work tells me to send a "Hijack This" log file to one of the computer experts websites around and they can debug it for you. I'm not really too crazy about editing files when I have little idea what they are but will do it if it is the only way and if the experts can be trusted.

Is there any other quicker and easier solutions to this?

2. Have you checked for spyware?
I'm no expert but download (if you can) spybot and adaware and run them. Both free, google 'em up and see if you can clean out some junk.

3. Spybot - Search & Destroy
This is a freeware program that can detect and delete spy-ware programs.

Search for the name or try zdnet.com to found a place to download it.

4. You might want to try this one
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php

My browser was getting so full every time I went on the Internet, that I was having to shut down and restart every hour. Since I've been using Spybot, which will search for and destroy unwanted spyware and then will immunize your browser from many known spyware downloads, I have had very little trouble and 99% less pop up ads.

7. Get Netscape, Mozilla or Opera
Even when properly configured MS internet explorer is slow and it sucks the big one as far as I am concerned.

17. That's what I did.
Just a couple of days ago, something I picked up off a web page snuck past my virus scanner, changed my default start page in IE, and made a few additions to my bookmarks list. I installed Mozilla and took IE/OE off my desktop, and I couldn't be happier.

9. Spyware Blaster
Is another one which is free, although they do accept donations.
SB is more preventative.

Spybot-make sure you immunize...I had missed doing that.

10. Happened to mine too... thanks to wife and/or kids who are
clueless about virii...
I had already been using Spybot and AdAware, but this one got past them
I took it back with spywareblaster, which has been added to the arsenal.
It is a good program that lets you prevent future hijackings.

11. do what the HijackThis.exe tells you to do
Edited on Thu Apr-08-04 09:23 PM by Alpharetta
get the HijackThis.exe from download.com

run it

when you run it it will find the hijacker and clean it out

HijackThis.exe will tell you what security update you need. until you get the security update, your browser will have the same hole and the hijacker will automatically find you very fast. so you HAVE to get the security update from Microsoft.com

13. Try CWShredder
See this page: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/cws/

Download CWShredder here: http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip to get rid of the hijack.

If that succeeds (and it should), then run Spybot to make sure you've got everything.

After that choose the Immunize option in Spybot and lock down Internet Explorer. Pay particular attention to the options that allow you to lock your homepage and Internet Options.

After that, download Mozilla Firefox and forget about Internet Explorer.

21. The browser I've been using at home is Netscape
I think they use Mozilla. I haven't had a bit of trouble with Netscape Navigator except that I sometimes need to go to the import links folder to find a few of the bookmarks I need from IE.

I will try CWSshredder.

14. Just run HijackThis and run through the items yourself
Edited on Thu Apr-08-04 09:49 PM by undisclosedlocation
It's pretty straightforward; I could do it, and I'm a notorious technopeasant. Most of the results will clearly be programs that you want or Windows needs. The hijacking scumware programs are usually pretty easy to spot. Only if you can't find and correct the problem yourself do you need to try a helpdesk. (You can also google key words or filenames from the results when in doubt along with HijackThis or "HijackThis log" and you'll usually find other people's runins with the same programs addressed on assorted help boards.)

15. If that doesn't work

WARNING: DON'T MESS WITH YOUR REGISTRY IF YOU DON'T KNOW SOMEWHAT WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

That being said use regedit, and search for the URL. Delete all references.

Maybe even before doing that, download the free version of Zone Alarm, Zone Alarm will block it, and when it does it tells you a program name. Scour your hard drive and registry for that program and delete all references. If the programs running you might not be able to delete it until you kill the process in taskmanger. You might even have to unregister the dll, before you do that. Or you can just boot into DOS and delete it.

It took house to house fighting to get rid of this one. It kept replicating its self in differing places all the time.

16. It's a hijack of your HOSTS file
Go here:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Read all abotu it.

You will want to clear out your HOSTS file first. If you want to know what's inside it, you can open it up with Notepad. Here's the location:

Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS

If you see some funny stuff in there, delete it all. Then copy the text given on the site to your HOSTS file. Save and close. This new HOSTS file will block out all the crapware servers and hijackers, as well as common banner and popup servers.

19. This might not be what youre looking for....
But I highly reccomend you switch to a Mozilla browser. Built in pop up blocking, really tough on cookies, more customizable favorites, built in IRC client; email program; etc, and generally more streamlined.

It also has an infamous tab feature thats really great for browsing the DU forums, among other things.

22. Thanks all for the suggestions
There are some suggestions I haven't tried yet. If all else fails I will just stick to using the Netscape Navigater. It has been doing alright.
