2. Helô Pinheiro

She was only 15 when Jobim and Moraes used to watch her stroll past the Veloso cafe every day.

7. I would expect

that someone casually mentioning pedophilia wouldn't do so with a sexy picture to accompany it, and absolutely no comment at all on how sick it is to ogle 15 year olds.

But this is the world we live in, isn't it. I keep forgetting what a sewer it can be.

I assumed the girl in the picture wasn't only 15. I assumed she was several years older in that pic.

If someone posted a comment like that with a picture of a 15 year old like that and said nothing about how sick it is, that'd be even worse.

9. We're not talking about pedophilia
We're talking about the history of a famous song. A lot of girls have claimed to be the one that song was written about. Maybe she's the one, maybe she isn't. The song was written about admiring a pretty girl walking by.

That may be sexist and objectifying in its own right, but pedophilia? Generally, a 15-year-old can be completely visually indistinguishable from an 18-year-old or even a 20-year-old. I'm not around a lot of people that age, so I sure as hell couldn't tell the difference if I didn't know anything else about the person. Pedophilia is being SPECIFICALLY attracted to children.

10. Fair enough.
None of the ones I know look anywhere near 18 to 20.

I maintain that its at the very least disturbing to mention it casually wihout further comment, but with a sexy picture.

Check out some of the online discussions about the way men feel about young teens. Society is warping itself around the entitlement of a subset of men.

11. Past puberty, I can't tell anyone with a 3-year age difference apart.
Hell, actors in their 20s play teens all the time in movies and TV and I usually don't even notice. Some teens do look older. Some older people look younger.

The bikini that girl is wearing in the picture is very modest by modern American standards---much less by Brazilian ones! And the song was written nearly 50 years ago, so it's hardly anything to do with current sexual behavior trends in any country.

Oh, I think the discussions you're talking about are creepy as hell. I don't think this discussion goes there, though. I mean the song itself isn't crass or lewd, you know.

12. Yeah, the song I like.
It's the casual mention of ogling 15 yr olds that bothers me.

13. But NO ONE ON THIS THREAD DID THAT.

Someone just posted a perfectly innocent picture of the girl and said, wow, she was only 15. That's ALL. There are no icky comments here.

I'm sorry to keep worrying this, but you seem to be seeing something going on in this thread that I just don't think is here. At all.

14. ?
"She was only 15 when Jobim and Moraes used to watch her stroll past the Veloso cafe every day."

The song was written about this 15 year old girl. I don't know how you're failing to put two and two together, but since you're getting all upset, I'm done.

Oh yeah, I meant to say I liked the song. Past tense. Now that I know this it will always disgust me.

16. ?

I'm not upset. I'm just puzzled.

I mean, yeah, if that really was the girl, it's just a historical fact. She walked by the cafe every day. They thought she was beautiful, and wrote a song about her. It became a hit. The fact (if it is a fact) that she was 15 doesn't change anything - it's not like THEY knew that. It's the same song it's always been - about watching a pretty girl walk by.

I just don't get the level of reaction here. The song isn't about having sex with her. In fact, the girl never acknowledges the narrator at all, and they never expect her to.

edit: I thought you meant that someone right here on this thread was making gross comments about ogling 15-year-olds. Not seeing that.

19. I have a terrible busking sax player on the corner at work.
When I first got this job in '07, there he was, playing the melody lines from "Happy Together," "My Favorite Things," and "Moondance." Badly.

By '09 he was still there, playing the same songs, with no noticeable improvement.

Somewhere around summer 10, he started up with the first few notes of a new song. Took me a while to get it, but a couple weeks of daily exposure later, I figured out what he was trying to play. Mm-hmmm. "The Girl from Ipanema."

By January of '11, he could actually remember most of the melody line.
