1. I'll go with the luxury car commercials.
The jewelry ads are annoying "He went to Jared's!" :puke:), but the car ads are far worse because they assume not only that there are people who both could and would actually buy somebody a luxury car for Christmas, but that such people could be influenced by a TV ad. While there may indeed be people who do that - hedge fund managers, etc. - I can't imagine that they'd be watching Ice Road Truckers reruns and see an ad for a Christmas-wrapped Lexus and decide to run out and buy one. The ads have no purpose except to remind the rest of us wretched peons that we will never, ever get a car for Christmas.

2. Jewlery commercials
I was happily married. Very happily married. Now I'm divorced through no fault of my own, single, bereft of feminine companionship for far too long and seemingly unable to correct this 6½-year downward drift.

So I really don't need an influx of incredibly happy people getting hitched on my TV screen.

3. There is a Zales ad that basically says buy her jewelry and you will get laid
My husband said no way - I described the commercial - it shows an unwrapped Zales box under the tree, a trail of clothing (and underclothing) and a champagne glass leading to a bedroom and the door closes just as the commercial ends

11. one thing I've always wondered about
If I spent $60,000 without consulting my wife, she would not be all teary and excited when I took her out to the driveway to see her new Lexus. She would be on the phone to a divorce attorney. The only exception would be if you had so damn much money that the car was just an incidental purchase, in which case she could have gone out and bought one herself.

14. the luxury car because it is just so in our faces about money
and it seems so completely out of step with Christmas.
Jewelry at least has a bit of intimacy to it.

16. Isn't a car purchase a mutual decision?
I can't imagine any household where one spouse just randomly goes out and buys the other a car.

17. The jewelry ones are for such inferior jewelry
I do usually get jewelry for my birthday (12/26) and yes, it's usually the diamond-and-platinum variety. But it doesn't come from anywhere that has ads on TV.

My husband did buy me my one and only new car as a gift ... but I picked the model, color and test drove it before it was actually bought.
