Best song from the 60s?
Too many good ones. But if I had to choose, I say:

"Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones

Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah
swing along,
as Paul twists John's heroin needle.

So let it out and let it in
Hey Jude begin..
Remember to let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better
Better, better, better, better, better, oh

Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah
Nah Nah Nah Nah, hey Jude

and, yes, I am a McCartney fan.

11. That song played like every 15 minutes on the radio.
I'm sorry to say I got so tired of it, I can't like it anymore. But I like a lot of Paul's stuff. My hubby is absolutely nuts about him. We've seen him in concert many times.

38. Motown was pretty amazing.
It's weird - In a way Motown was exactly the sort of corporate, music-as-an-assembly-line, fluffy, image-cultivating, overproduced pop studio like the ones currently shoveling out piles of autotuned junk. But since they were able to draw from the huge talent pool of professional Jazz and Blues musicians (many of them second generation or more) that existed in the African-American communities of Detroit, St Louis and Chicago and other northern cities, they managed to make a lot of awesome music.

Probably also helped that the musicians had a say in both the creative output and the business dealings of the label.

19. velvet underground - venus in furs
Certainly not my favorite, but very much a song of the sixties.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwzaifhSw2c

Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Comes in bells, your servant, don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

Downy sins of streetlight fancies
Chase the costumes she shall wear
Ermine furs adorn the imperious
Severin, Severin awaits you there

I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears

Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather
Shiny leather in the dark
Tongue of thongs, the belt that does await you
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

Severin, Severin, speak so slightly
Severin, down on your bended knee
Taste the whip, in love not given lightly
Taste the whip, now plead for me

I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears

Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Severin, your servant comes in bells, please don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

52. That's...actually my favorite rock song of all time.
Because of the SOUND. (I give most of the credit to Maureen Tucker and John Cale, on drums and viola respectively.) I can't think of a single song out of the 60s with a sexier and more arresting overall SOUND. That's the one that will always make me drop what I'm doing, stop dead and listen, and get happy in the pants.

(But I'm Gen X; I was born 2 years after that album came out, so what do I know? :D)

34. When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again
Was a big hit back in the 1860's.

Also decades run like this 1-10; 11-20 ... therefore the Sixties could be 1861-1870 or 1961-1970.
Please admit the songs from the last year of the decade 1970 or admit that you think we had a year zero! 0-9; 10-19 etc!

42. I don't know if it is possible to pick only one, but this ranks right up there:
Small Faces, Itchycoo Park

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJzcF0v1eOE&feature=related

Even the words are perfect... :)

"Over bridge of sighs
To rest my eyes in shades of green
Under dreamin' spires
To Itchycoo Park, that's where I've been"

"What did you do there?
I got high
What did you feel there?
Well I cried
But why the tears there?
I'll tell you why
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful"

"I feel inclined to blow my mind
Get hung up feed the ducks with a bun
They all come out to groove about
Be nice and have fun in the sun"

"Tell you what I'll do (what will you do?)
I'd like to go there now with you
You can miss out school (won't that be cool)
Why go to learn the words of fools?
What will we do there?
We'll get high
What will we touch there?
We'll touch the sky
But why the tears then?
I'll tell you why"

"It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful"

"I feel inclined to blow my mind
Get hung up feed the ducks with a bun
They all come out to groove about
Be nice and have fun in the sun"

"It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
Ha! It's all to beautiful"

Electricity - Captain Beefheart (obvious avatar bias)

I Wanna Be Your Dog - the Stooges

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJIqnXTqg8I

Fortunate Son - CCR

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ec0XKhAHR5I

If I had to *objectively* pick A greatest rock single of the 60s, I'd pick this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJDnJ0vXUgw

I know it's a trite choice, but it is just so fucking perfect in every way, from the slow buildup from the beginning, to the pervasive sense of dread, and Merry Clayton's backup singing (She'd also seal the deal on "Sweet Home Alabama" for Skynyrd just a few years later). You really, really cannot create a more perfect rock song than this. It's almost too perfect.

55. My favorite 1960s song is:
Tossin' and Turnin' by Bobby Lewis. That song is a beast! Personally I enjoy 1950s rock-n-roll the best. There was joy in that music that went away as rock-n-roll evolved into rock music. IMO, the best rock-n-roll music puts a smile on your face and makes you wanna dance. Tossin' and Turnin' does that for me for sure.
