Just curious.

1. Something quick preferrably, but something spectacular and "caught on tape".
I'd like the video of it to run on clip shows for the next fifty years.

4. It's been on my mind lately because of my own aging.
Sure, I threw some intended humor into it, but it really is an issue to consider seriously. My maternal grandmother, paternal grandmother, and both mother and father in laws died in nursing homes/retirement communities and both of the women were deep into the terrible path of Alzheimer's. My paternal grandfather died of brain cancer and my maternal grandfather (not blood-related) probably had cancer. He just fell off of the couch and died. My natural grandfather is still kicking at 90+.

Personally, I'd rather it be quick. I'm basically agnostic, but it really doesn't matter. There are really only three options: 1) Heaven/Hell/Purgatory; 2) a fart in the wind; 3) reincarnation. It isn't like we can do much about that or anything. Nobody can say for certain which is true, but many will profess to know.

I've awakened in the hospital a few times in recent years. They don't know the reason and I have no memory of the events. If I didn't wake up, would I even know? There are some options worse than death. As Sartre stated in "No Exit", "Hell is other people."

28. The only way you can choose is if you do it yourself.
My conclusion is that most people simply do not want to experience great pain.
Oddly in this country it seems like our government is hell-bent on making sure that you suffer by greatly controlling pain medications.
Make me think of the old Dorthy Parker quote on suicide:

Résumé

Razors pain you;

Rivers are damp;

Acids stain you;

And drugs cause cramp.

Guns aren't lawful;

Nooses give;

Gas smell awful;

You might as well live.

34. For the first time in my life, about 6 years
Edited on Thu Nov-17-11 07:31 PM by hyphenate
ago, I was anesthetized for a minor surgery, and when I woke up, I finally realized I knew what it would be like to die. During the time I was "under" I didn't know of existence, unless it was a very deep part of my subconscious.

I think death is just a more permanent version of that, and that's okay. Going to sleep and never waking up would be okay, but you wouldn't get to know the epiphany some people have when they realize they're about to die.

6. Not really - just a "how would you prefer" question.
The fifth option (in case you don't know Pryor's routine) was basically something like this...

"My daddy died fucking. He came and went at the same time. That (I think he says bitch, not sure) couldn't GIVE away pussy for two years. - 'Uh uh. You done killed one mother-fucker already. That's some pussy you can keep.'"

Mods - please excuse the language - that's just how I remember the routine and, well, I trust you know how the late Richard Pryor spoke.

8. It is natural. Would you really like to live forever?
We have to pass on our knowledge, feelings, and experiences to new generations and make the most of the time we have. I think eternal life would be pretty damn close to a living Hell. Have you seen "Bicentennial Man"? That really drives home the point.

40. There was an SF novel I read many, many years ago now
called "City" by Clfford Simak. The main character throughout the whole story was an android working for the central family, who lives for a very long time. It's interesting to see the long path humans have taken, and how a more pastoral civilization follows humanity. Living forever has its advantages--I certainly wouldn't mind seeing if we self-destruct, or if we reach the stars.

So far I only have a stent implanted, but it is a start until I reach the living tissue over a metal endoskeleton stage.

I kind of what to know I am going to die so I have a chance to say goodbye.
I don't want to be found dead, I think that's really hard for the person who finds you.
I also don't want to die unexpectedly.
But you can't control death, so I just live my life to the fullest every day.

20. Lt. Frank Drebin said it best

Frank: A good cop - needlessly cut down by some cowardly hoodlums.
Ed: That's no way for a man to die.
Frank: No... you're right, Ed. A parachute not opening... that's a way to die. Getting caught in the gears of a combine... having your nuts bit off by a Laplander, that's the way I wanna go!
Wilma Nordberg: (cries) Oh... Frank. This is terrible!
Ed: Don't you worry, Wilma. Your husband is going to be alright. Don't you worry about anything. Just think positive. Never let a doubt enter your mind.
Frank: He's right, Wilma. But I wouldn't wait until the last minute to fill out those organ donor cards.
(Wilma cries again)
Ed: What I'm trying to say is that, Wilma, as soon as Nordberg is better, he's welcome back at Police Squad.
Frank: ...Unless he's a drooling vegetable. But I think that's only common sense.
(Wilma cries again)

33. I think it might be okay
to die of cardiac arrest in the middle of a crowded emergency physicians' convention. Preferably in a big city on the east coast. During a beautiful day in late May, with a cerulean colored sky and scattered clouds.

And then I want a cremation, with my ashes scattered over the Atlantic Ocean. :)
