But I can't find ANYTHING about it except a closed memorial page from the funeral place. (which can be re-opened for $30 but what if there is nothing in it?) WTF? Aren't these things somewhat public record? Or is my google broken?

I have run into this before. Nothing but the listing at the funeral home. You won't really find out anything by paying to reopen.

I was kind of hoping somebody with a faster connection or better skills might find something.
Strange. He led a pretty uh, unhealthy lifestyle (way too much booze and drugs) but the fact that the grapevine was so slow on this is really odd. Had a call from another friend wanting his phone number, and then he called back and said he finally heard from the SO and she told him Chip had died in July. No details forthcoming. Weird.
