Houses also get 'wet garbage' picked up but I am in a building so we don't recycle organic waste. They are just building a plant in our city that will burn garbage and turn it into electricity.

1. yep - plastic, glass, aluminum cans, newspapers and cardboard
We don't do the "wet garbage" thing though. The township provides each home with a recycle bin so as not to confuse the recyclables from the regular trash. At first years ago they tried having pick ups for different items on different days (plastic on one day, glass on another, etc.) but it just confused the hell out of everyone, so they got rid of that idea and pick up all the recyclables every trash day and sort them out themselves.

I'm kind of surprised how diligent people are about separating out the recyclables from their regular trash. I always figured most people would find it a pain in the ass, but pretty much everyone is really good about it.

3. Yes. We also compost.
Edited on Sun Oct-30-11 06:45 AM by alphafemale
Up until now I've just been dumping it in a pit in the yard along with grass clippings and the like, but that is mostly filled in and growing over now. I'm thinking of maybe starting a worm compost. I've done it before. They can turn scrap into a delightful mix in an amazing time.

on edit.

We also take all our non-recyclable trash to the dump as well. The recycle area/dump is all in the same place, about two miles from here. Seemed silly to continue to pay for garbage service when they DID NOT offerr garbage service and we only had maybe a small, forlorn bag of trashtrash in that huge can every week.

4. Yes.
The city supplies recycling bins to put that stuff in for pickup, and there's also a recycling center where you can get rid of things like old computers and paint. I have a compost bin for most organic waste as well.

5. We have curbside recycling
They will pick up aluminum cans, steel (tin?) cans, paper/cardboard and some plastics. They will no longer pick up glass, but the recycle center will accept it if you drop it off yourself.

I am seeing lots of cars cruising neighborhoods on trash night to pick out the aluminum cans from the recycle boxes. They can be sold to the recycle center for 50ish cents/lb.

6. Yes. Our pickup is fairly inclusive but pales in comparison to what you get in some areas in Canada
With food scrap collection and what not.
