Computer Question - Regarding Video
I ripped a DVD recently with smartripper. The files it put on my hard drive were vob files. Two large files (about 700 MB) these were my video data. Anyway, I could actually open up these two vob files with powerDVD and they played and looked perfect. My question is....if I burned these two files exactly as they are onto CDs...would they be able to play in my DVD player?

1. I don't think so
though I never have tried it. I think they need to be recoded to .avi or MPEG files, then burned to CD-R as video files.
You might try it on a CDRW. That way you won't waste a disk.

2. No.
I'm pretty sure that the DVD player will need some sort of other file besides the .vob in order to play, like a .ifo or something. Even then, it's doubtful that would work..

Most people who rip DVD's convert them into VCD's, which are a slightly lower quality format, but then you can watch them in your DVD player without having to buy a DVD burner.

try that.

when creating dvds certain standards must be respected (just as with the creation of vcds and svcds).
For example a specific structure (directories and files) has to be maintained on the cd/dvd.

Usually a standalone dvd-player wont recognise a regular cdr as dvd video even if it has vob files on it. there is however a workaround (a sort of hack) and its called miniDVD.

if you google on miniDVD you will get loads of sites guiding you through this process.

here's a good one for starters:

hope this helps

5. VCD is what you are looking for
I played around with it a while ago. Search the internet, there are some great sites.

I think sVCD does DVD quality or at least close to it. VCD is more like VCR quality but still fun.

Not all DVD players support the VCD formats but there are charts out there of the ones that do.

And before the copyright police show up, you, of course, are merely making yourself an archival copy, which is your right. :)

6. You can try it, but I DO NOT think it will work
DVD players check for the type of disk inserted (capacity) then check for compatable formatting. If you convert to MPEG and burn to CD it would work on most new players.

Try it and report back. Good luck!

7. unfortunately
there are no mpeg 2 files on the DVD. Just vob files. I just used smartripper to rip the vob files into slightly smaller vob files. I have no idea what format they were in or what format they are in now. What format is a vob file?

8. Yes!
If you were able to play them using Power DVD those same files would be copied onto the DVD and would play normally.
I use PowerDVD on my computer and have a HP 3001 burner.
By the way, what are you paying for blanks?
