I need a good math person to answer this question for me please.

This is serious, my basement is flooded and I need to protect my furnace and yet not have a heart attack. I'm no young 'un anymore.

How many buckets filled with 4 gallons of water have to be removed to lower the water level about one inch from a floor that is approximately 1200 square feet?

I tried to work it out but I just can't. Have had no sleep all night.

I'd like to know how many buckets to help push me to do this. Don't know when the plumber will get here to snake drain and we could get yet more torrents of rain at any time. There are no wet vacs nor sump pumps left in any stores in York County as of 1 pm yesterday.

5. Ok. Using the internets, one cubic foot is about 7.5 gallons.

20 feet by 60 feet by about .1 feet (little over an inch) = 120 cubic feet (of water to be removed)

120 cubic feet divided by 7.5 gallons = 1 gallon would remove 16 feet of water (like 4 ft by 4 ft by .1 ft)

So a four gallon bucket would remove 64.

So it would only take 2 buckets?

I give up plumber is here.

13. ooh ooh Mister Kotter!
And what if the rate of water loss through the hole was dependent upon the amount of water in the bucket so that the rate diminishes as the water leaks out? Now you got yourself a problem!

10. This is the correct answer. Here is the math
First, I convert everything to metric because it's easier to work with. I'm starting with dimensions of 30 feet by 40 feet.

40 feet = 1219.2 centimeter

30 feet = 914.4 centimeter

40'x30' = 1114836.48 square centimeters

1 inch = 2.54 centimeter

1114836.48 x 2.54 (or, 1200ft x 1") = 2831684.6592 cubic centimenters (1cc = 1ml)

4 gallons = 15141.647136 cubic centimeters

2831684.6592 divided by 15141.647136 = 187 (and change)

12. I concur
but I used google calculator because I'm even lazier. Just type "1200 square feet * 1 inch in gallons" into google and you get:

Then 748/4 = 187 buckets

19. First, convert from furlongs to fortnights. Makes things easier.
Then remember that each of those buckets is going to weight 32 lbs full - and feel like more going up the stairs. Ready for a workout?
