So it's official: I am dying
The treatment planning meeting yesterday gave us some bad news. Besides the tumor in my tongue, there is activity in my lungs and liver. Even with aggressive surgery, I would only be buying a few months. I can try chemo, which might shrink all the tumors some, but we're still only looking at a year, at the most. The doctor said 18 months would be beyond the range of possibility.

DU, I've loved you, and when I cross over, I expect to hang around in some heavenly Lounge with Kheph and Andy and 180 and all the DUers who have gone to the Great Internet in the Sky. I'll keep you updated when I can.

So it goes.

Tucker

276. I am posting here to maximize your chance of seeing this.
There's a book entitled Recalled by Life.
The author is: Anthony J. Sattilaro
He describes what happened to him. He was a doctor and head of a hospital.
He was diagnosed with a kind of cancer for which his odds of living were very close to zero.
He tried an unorthodox approach and recovered fully. Bone scans showed that the cancer was gone.
Ten years later he went off the special dietary regimen and got cancer again and died.

You'll be sadly missed. You've touched a lot of lives here with your wit and your courage.

Please get in touch with hospice. They can help make the time remaining more comfortable and more meaningful. If there's any way at all that we can help - even if it's just to answer a post at 3 a.m. - please let us know.

We love you.

12. Oh, Tucker...I don't know what to say.
I obviously don't know you, but have read your posts enough to know what a good and kind soul you are. Just my personal beliefs, which I try to never impose on anyone else, but I believe that your kind, compassionate soul will not cease to exist. My eyes though, are welling up as I type this. May the love of your family and friends help sustain you as you approach the end of this journey.

41. This is terrible news and I am so sorry to hear it.

I hope you can find some peace while you are here on Earth; I know you wrote earlier that you were afraid of not being anymore and what is beyond. I hope you come to terms with it all and find some answers, either here or in the Internet in the Sky. I sure as hell don't have any answers or even ideas.

I hope you can live every moment you have exactly as you wish to, and in no discomfort.

And - I don't know if it appeals to you at all - but my friend did find some relief through the Cancer Treatment Centers of America.

73. Dear Tucker,
I hope that this year you feel some gentle rain on your face
catch a snowflake on your nose

eyelash kiss someone
dance the waltz
feel the wind on your face

get many hugs
birds singing
watch them fly.

the children at play
pet many kitties ( and dogs, too )
the leaves in fall

the green grass

the blue sky, remember watching the clouds?

and eat . . .
everything.

Eat it all.
Eat Life.

Share and be shared.

Every moment has the potential to be magical and memorable.

80. DU is clearly here for you -
myself included, even though I'm not good with words in this kind of situation. Thankyou for allowing me to be reminded. After some of the things I have read about another DUer who also recently faced serious health problems with much help from the lounge, I was feeling pretty negative about the place. But the truth is, we mostly are capable of compassion and caring.

Thanks for helping to unite and for reminding us how this place can have very real effects on individuals.

I wish you comfort and peace.

85. Tucker, thank you for telling us. But here's the deal: NEVER stop fighting.
NEVER give up.

I know several people who were given prognoses of "A year or less. Eighteen months, tops," and those prognoses were wrong. One lived for seven years and had many friends and much joy (if some pain and depression as well) during that time.

You know you are going to die. Well, me too. All of us, in fact. No one gets out alive.

Just keep telling yourself, "Not TODAY, dammit. Things to do, sunrises/sunsets to watch, dogs/cats to pet, people to love."

You have more time than you think.

And we all have less time than we think.

All any of us has is right this instant.

NEVER give up.

Keep sharing.

Holding you in the Light for much love and joy and peace in the days, weeks, months, year(s)? to come.

appreciatively,
Bright

My heart to you and your family. Don't let them push you to do anything you don't want to. And have your family and friends help you make sure you get what you DO want and need. This is your time, and you are priceless.

I am glad to have crossed your path here and so very sorry for what you are facing.

Strength, and peace to you.

And a hug, if one more is okay. ((((((Tucker))))))

I'm sorry for what you're losing. I wish you all the best in whatever comes next.

Pray. It might help. It can't hurt.

I have no idea what I'd do in your situation. Do you just hold your loved ones tight and not let go? Do you take your American Express card to Las Vegas and keep buying chips ar Caesars until they just won't loan you any more damn money? Do you call the Japanese embassy and ask what kind of help they need at Fukushima? Do you go to Carmel and watch sunsets at Pebble Beach?

Look
Here are we
On this starry night staring into space
And I must say
I feel as small as dust
Lying down here
What point could there be troubling
Head down wondering what will
become of me
Why concern we cannot see
But no reason to abandon it
Time is short but that's all right
Maybe I'll go in the middle of the night
Take your hands from your eyes, my love
Everything must end some time
Don't burn the day away
(DMB)

Wishing you safe travels.

None of us knows how long we have. Any one of us could be dead in six momths, or even tomorrow. In fact, I just about had a truck plow into my bicycle today, and my last words would have been "sh*t, g*dd1mn, fu$%!"

Kinda what I am thinking, reading your post.

In some ways, it is nice to have six months of warning, instead of just having it hit you in the face like an 18 pound sledge.

Actually, the truck wasn't moving that fast, and neither was I. I probably just would have gotten hurt real bad and lost my good bike.

I try to encourage people to enjoy the limited days they have, advice I don't always take myself. Having read your post, inspired me to fire up some music, starting with "The Dark side". Had me dancing in my chair. Thanks

121. I hope you don't mind I wrote this off the cuff and from the heart....
We never met but I know you well

you are the sun that shines and warms the earth

the rain that quells the thirst the fields

when a heartbreaks you are there to heal

where there is joy you are there to share

you fight the good fight and never relent

you are generous when offering hope

this is the living legacy the light that

never dies, I know this from all that you

have touched here at DU.

My thoughts are with you and I hope you put yourself first and don't worry too much about those around you at this time. Not to be selfish, but don't push yourself too hard, it is so easy to do and so easy to still want to take care of everyone else first. Let people volunteer as much as possible, I am sure everyone wants to help you as you have helped them.

133. I wasn't going to forward this email I got this evening,
But then, why not here:

Read carefully & you be the judge.
Lemon (Citrus) is a miraculous product to kill cancer cells. It is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy.
Why do we not know about that? Because there are laboratories interested in making a synthetic version that will bring them huge profits. You can now help a friend in need by letting him/her know that lemon juice is beneficial in preventing the disease. Its taste is pleasant and it does not produce the horrific effects of chemotherapy. How many people will die while this closely guarded secret is kept, so as not to jeopardize the beneficial multimillionaires large corporations? As you know, the lemon tree is known for its varieties of lemons and limes. You can eat the fruit in different ways: you can eat the pulp, juice press, prepare drinks, sorbets, pastries, etc... It is credited with many virtues, but the most interesting is the effect it produces on cysts and tumors. This plant is a proven remedy against cancers of all types. Some say it is very useful in all variants of cancer. It is considered also as an anti microbial spectrum against bacterial infections and fungi, effective against internal parasites and worms, it regulates blood pressure which is too high and an antidepressant, combats stress and nervous disorders.
The source of this information is fascinating: it comes from one of the largest drug manufacturers in the world, says that after more than 20 laboratory tests since 1970, the extracts revealed that: It destroys the malignant cells in 12 cancers, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreas ... The compounds of this tree showed 10,000 times better than the product Adriamycin, a drug normally used chemotherapeutic in the world, slowing the growth of cancer cells. And what is even more astonishing: this type of therapy with lemon extract only destroys malignant cancer cells and it does not affect healthy cells.

144. I'm so sorry to hear this terrible news.
May I suggest that you and your family talk with your local Hospice organization? The people I've dealt with there have been wonderfully caring and supportive to all my family. I found the Hospice visiting nurse kept the medical staff on their toes and made sure my Mom was kept very comfortable. She gave my Mom a very thorough, but not intrusive, physical exam three times a week, and gave me as my Mom's primary caregiver great peace of mind. My only regret was that I didn't contact them earlier.

159. so sad. I think the worst part is when there is nothing more you can do
When we found out about my dad, it was so awful. I guess the only 'good' thing was that he went quickly. Within two weeks he was gone. But then, by the time we found out, it had spread so bad they didn't even know where it started. Lost his girlfriend this past year as well to cancer.

I want to cry, even though I have never met you. We are all related here. My thoughts are with you.

I've never been in this position myself but I've had loved ones who have faced this. As great as the progress in medical science has been, there are still limitations. Sometimes all that is left is to hope for answers beyond that which science can give. I hope that you can defy the odds but no matter what, I hope that the time you have left among us is as happy, comfortable and pain-free as possible.

163. You are very courageous in your facing of the news.
I know this, because I saw my father go through this as well. His last column was a big farewell.
Maybe his last words will give you some inspiration:

"I'm still here, and I want to write until the keyboard fails to respond to my fingers and my voice can no longer draw information from those to whom I speak on the telephone.

"I don't know how near the end is, nor will I spend time worrying about it. It has been a wonderful life, personally and professionally, and the recognition of that from so many whom I love and respect leaves no room for regrets.

"So, agree with what I write or not, don't stop reading. Each day has to bring a new miracle with it."

May each of your days left bring a new miracle as well.

The only good thing about knowing you're going is that you can tie up some loose ends in your life - reconnect with people you've lost touch with, apologize for past indiscretions, tell the people who have hurt you to go to hell, plan a kick-ass memorial service for yourself. My greatest hope for you is that you will be at peace when you pass, surrounded by loving friends and family, with nothing left unsaid between you.

I send you strength to endure what you must these next months.

It sounds like you've had a full life, from what I've read of your posts,

I hope, at the time of your death, your heart is as light as a feather :)

I do believe in an afterlife, more than what is called Heaven: like an alternate but fairly equal reality -- I just hope this one is much more peaceful and indulges in little-to-no wars.

(If you're interested in the experiences & philosophy that have shaped me to this view, just ask in an email -- I don't want to hijack & bogart your thread with all this philosophical/parapsychology stuff..

Anyways:

Did you just ask 'Can you love yourself?'
(I know, strange, but I heard it when writing those words

& no, I'm no schizophrenic :)

There's nothing good about this, but I hope that the end of uncertainty will now allow you to focus on squeezing the most out of every moment. You may able to fit years of living into the time you have left--whether it's by travel or time with loved ones or just by paying attention to the miracle of being here now.

Hospice could be enormously helpful in keeping you as pain-free as possible, and they're wonderful with emotional support, too. I have never, ever heard anyone say they regretted involving hospice, or that they wished they'd waited longer to call them. They could be such a big help to you.

It must have broken your heart to get such awful news... we're all giving you a virtual :grouphug:

Calling hospice doesn't mean "giving up". I've known patients who "graduated" from hospice when their condition suddenly improved. I pray like hell that that happens to you! But in the meantime they can offer you tremendous emotional and spiritual support, as well as the means to keep you comfortable and pain-free.

Never doubt that you've influenced people for the better here. With your calm, matter-of-fact explanations, you've helped me many times over the years see a much larger world. And now you're teaching us about courage in facing death.
I'll miss you, Tucker. Say hi to oneighty and the others for me.

May you have all the time you need.

http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/dying_to_have_known/ if you wanted to try, I'm sure that Skinner would allow us to have a collection for you. It's what I would do in your situation. I just lost my father to cancer so it's still hard for me to talk about the illness; it was tough talking to him about it, and it's very difficult to even type these words. I'm so sorry that this is happening to you. You are a truly beautiful soul and deserve much, much better. :loveya:

Oh and thank you Lorien

It's time for us to aggressively fight the polluters who are consciously choosing to poison the earth and us. They have a vested interest in intentionally making us sick, as it is highly profitable for them. They have declared war on the earth of whom we are a part. They must be stopped, dead in their tracks. The health of the earth is the health of you and me.

As for your treatment, try not to just lay down and not get up. Keep yourself busy somehow. Surround yourself with uplifting people. Honor your whole being. Love life. Embrace the light when it comes.

265. such hard news to bear
A good friend of mine went through a similar ordeal; it started out as a tumor under his tongue, which spread to the lymph nodes, lungs, and eventually throughout his body. Towards the end, he told me that he wished he had never done the surgery to get rid of the tumor in his lung. He wished he could have just enjoyed a good quality of life, even if it was brief.

But each situation is unique. You have some truly difficult choices to make with your family. I wish you peace and wisdom in doing it. I hope you will have the strength -- physical and mental -- to continue posting on DU because you will have a lot to teach us in the months to come.

266. I have registered here at DU many times. I periodically drift away only to come back and lurk for a
while.

I re-registered today just to let you know that I had a similar diagnosis several years ago, and I'm still here.

I really thought the words "inoperable" were terrifying until I saw some of the patients who had undergone the operations I was unable to have and it made me think "inoperable" wasn't so bad after all.

I wasn't supposed to get better, but I did.

I have difficulty swallowing sometimes and I lost some hair that never grew back and I lost some of my hearing, but I got better.

I won't say "don't give up hope" because sometimes hope is just not a rational reaction to the facts you are dealing with, but I will say "don't give up living."

Am I going to die of cancer?

Probably (stage four head and neck cancers have a higher rate of recurrence than some other cancers).

I may very well die of cancer, but not today, not tomorrow, and not even this week.

Who knows ... I might get hit by a bus before my cancer comes back, but -- then -- nobody knows for sure whether they are going to be hit by a bus tomorrow. In truth, your future is unknown. Certain outcomes might be more probably than others, but no single outcome is guaranteed.

Right now, your doctors may say that they know your fate, but nothing is certain. Because the odds always favor the house, each person who goes to Las Vegas will probably come home a loser, but that does not mean that everybody comes home a loser.

Your dice have not been rolled yet.

Good luck and take care.

If you need someone to talk with, you are welcome to PM me.

I want to rehome him before I die, so that I will know he is in a safe place where he can learn to be a bird and not get passed from owner to owner anymore. (I am his third owner and have had him for 8 of his 18 years, bringing him from a malnourished feather-plucking neurotic half-naked fuzzball to his current feathery magnificence.)

286. Cancer is NOT a death sentence. Cures exist!!!
It's essentially a nutritional deficiency. Lots of people have pulled out of stage-4s even at the last minute simply by changing their diet. There are lots of different ways to do it.

287. Alien Girl - to me (old timer) you have always shown grace and strength.
If you gave inspiration and comfort to an anonymous Duer for years, I can only imagine the inspiration you give to those in your immediate life. Keep living with inspiration. It is part of your legacy. That doesn't mean do anything differently - you inspire because that is who you are.

I am so sorry to hear of this, and you will be in my prayers.

294. AlienGirl, Thom Hartmann's dad got cancer. He was given 3 months to live, but he lived FIVE YEARS
beyond that instead!

Thom and his brother put him on tumeric capsules (two a day)...Tumeric is a spice used a lot in Indian

food, and it began to be used as a supplement when researchers noticed cancer is a LOT rarer in India than in

other parts of the Western World..You can get it at any vitamin/health food store.

Thom told this story on the radio awhile back, saying he now takes a capsule a day as "insurance" and I am doing the same thing.

PLEASE don't GIVE UP, Tucker -- Not without trying everything possible!

302. Exactly...Thom Hartmann's dad had cancer & was given 3 months. He wound up living five years.
Thom and his brother gave him tumeric capsules...They're a spice often found in Indian foods,

a fact many scientist believe is responsible for Indians having far less cancer deaths than other countries.

As I explain in a post above, he took two a day and VASTLY outlived the doctor's prediction -- 3 months to 5 years?!

Thom says he now takes one himself, as a kind of "insurance" and so do I.

I told Tucker not to give up until trying EVERYTHING possible.

355. Sorry, guys...when I could eat, I ate LOTS of Indian food and used turmeric liberally in my cooking
Edited on Mon Sep-05-11 03:03 PM by AlienGirl
Had a first tumor anyway, in 2002. Got the second primary occurrence anyway.

Maybe it would have been worse without the turmeric and other protective antioxidants and adaptogens. But there is, as yet, no nutritional magic bullet that fixes all cancer for everyone, any more than there is a chemotherapeutic or radiotherapeutic magic bullet.

305. "My work is done..." (keep reading...)
Though short has been life's span,
I have known brotherehood,
And man to man
have felt the stirring kinship of the tried,
The nobleness of sacrifice, the pride
That causes man to taste the bitter with the sweet,
And, tasting, lift his head above defeat,
And strongly brave his task.
For, serving thus, he gives to life and to eternity
That spark of genius bequeathed to him...."

"And this I know, when now, my race is run,
When starlight falls o'er oaken hills,
And setting sun bespeaks the end of my life span
I have been challenged to the best in me.
I have been strengthened...
I go, Great Spirit, answering Thy call,
For it is well--my brothers carry on."

"O Lord, support us all the day long,
Until the shadows lengthen
And the evening comes,
And the fever of life is over,
And the busy world is hushed,
And our work is done.

Then, in Thy mercy, grant us
A safe lodging,
And a holy rest,
And peace at the last."

Bless you, AlienGirl!

310. Very sorry to hear this. But I do believe in miracles. People have been told before by doctors
that they have little time to live and then it turned out that the doctors were wrong. My friend Tony was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in the spring of 2003 and was told he had one year at most. Well, he is still alive today. He insisted on chemo and radiation even though they told him it probably wouldn't help. But the tumor went into remission. He is not out of the woods yet but he has made it for eight productive years when they told him he had one. Perhaps you will be another story like that.

... about judging people with "bad teeth" and how one never knows why someone's teeth may be "bad". Coincidentally, I read that particular post the night before I was to see a surgeon for a "spot" on my tongue the dentist found - I was lucky but I did lose some sleep.

I lost my mom to cancer. If there is any "bright side" to cancer, it does give one time to say goodbye. But it sucks nonetheless.

We never know what is going to happen, even when someone tells us what they think will happen.

Live your life. Live the hell out of it. Grab all the love, joy, happiness and laughter you can.
Leave the stress, as hard as it sounds, to others. Let your spirit soar ON EARTH, right now.
Most of all, I repeat, grab the love, grab the love, grab the love. And say 'I love you' to everyone you love,
every day, every day, every day.

And know that whatever the future brings, your DU family is standing all around you,
supporting you every step of the way.

I've never talked to you before, but I wish you all the best in your fight against cancer. Doctors make mistakes sometimes -- one of my pets was given 3 months to live after a cancer diagnosis, but she ended up living 2.5 years! Maybe that will happen with you as well. Look into cannabis for pain relief if necessary. Best of luck.

Don't have the surgery eat all of your favorite foods and try things you always wanted to.

Try to see some things and visit people while you are still feeling well.

Wrench every last moment of joy from this shit deal you were dealt.

I am so glad that it sounds as if you have friends that will see you through this and not forsake you.

Even given as awful as this diagnosis is...to have friends like that is a blessing.

And I'm sure they would say that they are blessed to have known you.

I hope you have far more time than the doctor thinks, and I hope it is free of pain, and full of love every day.
