In the documentary, "Dream of the Blue Turtles", Branford Marsalis admits that he
started out playing the clarinet. When asked how and why he switched to play the
saxophone, he replied "I saw that clarinet players didn't get the girls.:

1. Okay, MFM, I have an old Strat (not pre-CBS, unfortunately)
...and in my lifetime, I've owed a Les Paul, and Ibanez and a Japanese Les Paul knockoff called a "Lotus". So why did I learn to play guitar? Certainly not to get the chicks. Y'know why????

CUZ I'M A STRAIGHT WOMAN, THAT'S WHY!!!!

There are those of us XX who play electric, not just folky accoustic tunes. It's not 1976 anymore.

3. OK -- there's an IMPLIED straight male guitarist there -- sometimes I don't list all the qualifiers
.
.
.
.
.
There are gay guitarists who don't do it for "the chicks" (however there
are probably some lesbian guitarists who DO).
.
.
.
I mean, given the choice between being a virtuoso accordian player and
achieving world prominence in that field... or having a mediocre career
as a rock guitarist with all the associated groupies -- the VAST majority
of straight, hormonally-driven young males are going to say, "FUCK the
polka!!!"
.
.
.
And while the acoustic guitar may get a straight male a rep as a
sensitive, attractive guy and get him a girlfriend... going electric
opens up the POTENTIAL for snorting blow off prominent body parts.
.
.
.
The only motivation stronger than THAT for a young hetero male is...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
...hell -- there IS no motivation stronger than that.
.
.
.
.
.
And, by the way... I've been holding on to this for awhile and you
finally gave me a chance to use it.
.
.
Thanks.

8. Dudes also invented the wheel based on that motivation.
And don't worry, I'm well aware of the point you were making. Eric Clapton said the same thing too....so we can thank hormones for some of the greatest musicians out there.

When we played in the 80s, chicks with electric guitars were a real novelty. And our female drummer was asked in Guitar Center if she was buying those sticks for her boyfriend. But times have gotten better, thank Gawd.

Although, some things never change. Our keyboardist had a son in 93, and when he was a toddler he came to all of our rehearsals with a plastic strat. When we played, he'd bang on the toy and imitate us. Now he's 18 and bass player extrodinare. He told me he decided on the bass because it has the extra enigma that would get him the kind of girlfriend who went for smart, quiet types. \

So there you have it!

...all guitarists hope to make enough money from paying gigs to one day be able to afford a kitten.

6. In his sort - of autobiography, Jimmy Buffett admits the same
He never seemed to have any luck with girls in college, but his roommate (who happened to played an acoustic guitar) seemed to be successful at every party. Buffett finally asked him what his secret was. His roommate said, "three chords." Buffett begged him to teach him those three chords.

The rest, as they say, is history.
