What great man (living or dead) would you consider naming a child after?
Having my first grandchild (boy) soon. We are all trying to help select a name. I shared with my daughter that she should pick the name of someone she admires and the child can be proud of. But then I could not think of any. Martin, Mahatma ... great people but not so great names.

1. Slobodan Milosevic
Actually, I was always fond of the name "Slobodan Milosevic". The guy was a war criminal, but it's a really fun name to say. Too bad he looks just like Newt. Say it slowly and you'll use every part of your mouth.

(NB: this post does not condone ethnic cleansing)

3. Charles Edward Anderson Berry
Aka Chuck Berry. You want social progress? Chuck Berry brought (black) Rock and Roll to the masses and the world has never been the same.
Or, how about Jackie Robinson? Another great civil rights pioneer and a helluva ball player as well. Just a couple of suggestions. Maybe good, maybe not. Good luck with the grandchild. They are cool.

7. Atticus? That name is really making a come back.
I work at a K-12 school and this year we have a couple of K's named Atticus. I know it's from fiction, but he was still a great man.

8. My daughter's middle name is Paul, for Wellstone.
Edited on Sun Aug-28-11 08:34 PM by Brickbat
She was born a few days after he died. The funny thing, she has right-wing great-grandfathers on both sides named Paul, so everyone was happy.

9. Sheshank. XXII Dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh.

11. Arthur.
My music teacher had four boys.
He named one of them John Arthur, after Arthur Rubinstein, famous pianist.
Named another one Nathan, after Nathan Milstein, famous violinist.

Or Art Garfunkel who I always thought was way cooler than Paul Simon.

12. Octavian. (AKA Augustus)
Edited on Mon Aug-29-11 12:22 AM by Odin2005
I have a coworker who named her son that, awesome name! Everyone calls him Tavian or Tave.

And in any case Octavian is one of my favorite historical figures. A scrawny, possibly asthmatic, teenager when great-uncle Caesar was killed, but still gave Mark Antony the finger.

13. The name Darwin is just like a natural with my surname. ...
There already was a cousin with that name so none of my
boys got that name...I still think it is a grand name.

From Charles Darwin...:)
