I thought Tombstone pizzas were supposed to be pretty good

I bought one a couple of weeks ago. They were on extreme sale. I don't remember the exact numbers, but they're usually something like seven or eight dollars, and I got it for less than three.

It looked good in the picture on the package.

I managed to choke down a couple of slices, to get my RDA of calories, but damn, that was nasty.

And why did it try to curl up into a ball in my oven?

Are there any good brands of frozen pizza?

As a side note, have you noticed that the quality of many products, and most especially food-products, have been really nosediving lately?

1. Tombstone is pretty middling.

Better than Tony's or store-brands or Elios but not as good as Freschetta, DiGiorno or CPK. Newman's Own has a pretty okay frozen pizza.

$7 is too much to pay for a Tombstone, they're like $4.50-$5 here at Target.

I get better pizza results (cheaper too) from buying the premade crusts (which freeze fine) and making my own pizza (because I can control things like the amount and quality of cheese and the pizza sauce. (Sadly it seems my favorite pizza sauce (Mid's) has been pushed out of my local supermarket by Don Pepino and Ragu, both of which are crap.)

4. I make my own with pre-made crusts.

Due to my lactose problem I can't have frozen or delivery made with cheese but I love pizza. I have used various cheese substitutes and I like Mamma Mary's crusts.

9. If you have a Trader Joe's nearby...

...they have a couple of different refrigerated...not frozen...pizzas that are pretty good. They are small / "personal" sized, not 12-inchers.

The Margherita pizza is pretty good. It comes with a little envelope of fresh basil that you cut into slivers and spread over the top.

They also used to have a "Greek" pizza with feta instead of mozzarella and olives.

Pretty much any frozen pizza I've tried has had that "frozen pizza taste."

If you don't live near a Trader Joe's, virtually any non-chain market, especially the upscale ones, will have a good refrigerated fresh ready-to-bake pizza in the deli section...just ask.

10. English muffins, tomato paste, a little cheese, and the veg of your choice in the oven

It's just as quick as a frozen pizza, has 80% less sodium, and is easily customizeable. I assume it's also less expensive. I recommend the artichoke/asparagus/kalamata olive topping combo. But spinach/basil/pesto sauce can be a winner too.

Kraft bought them and now Nestles owns them.

I worked at the Kraft plant for awhile as a temp. I mostly work on the DiGiorno's line or making Jacks pizza. I never saw the California Pizza Kitchen product while I was there. But they did expand quite a bit the last few years.

Jacks was the cheaper of them, often selling 5 for $10. Tombstone was between $5 and $6. I've seen Pizza curl up in the past. I don't know why that is. Gas oven without a pizza pan?

I like the Red Baron Pan Pizzas. Frozen pizza's are all pretty much meh!

"Pizza in a Cup", is still probably the best.
