School fundraisers. Ugh.
I hate them. Sally Foster, Great American, Enjoy the City, whatever...all worthless junk that I refuse to make my kids sell. I pay the opt-out fee.

When did this crap start? I don't recall having to sell anything for school, except for the after-school clubs.

1. We never sold for school but we did for clubs...
as you said. The band had many fundraisers but my favorite was Band Day. All over town we had car washes, performances, yard cleaning, gift wrapping, and bake sales. Small town life!

12. I have no problem with that.
Selling stuff for the band, swim team, etc., is one thing, but just to keep schools running? It's sad.

2. We sold flower and veg seeds back in the 40s and 50s.
I hated it.
We 5th and 6th graders were issued a box of seed packets at school and expected to sell them door-to-door, or to friends and relatives.
Grandpa usually bought all of mine, bless him.

3. BSA popcorn--the most painful task
It's SO friggin' expensive, I end up apologizing to people looking at the list of products and pointing out the cheapest options.

We just got the flyer in the mail--I didn't even know the sale had started already. And to win the toy prize, the boys have to sell SIX HUNDRED dollars' worth of this crap! Naturally it's always a projectile/gun of some sort, and the minute they see it, they want it.

Also fun--we live in a small village, so between the Boy Scouts and the Cub Scouts, everyone gets tapped several times. We don't even bother trying to sell around here--we go to my mom's suburb instead. :banghead:

4. It is mostly the PTO that does this in our district.
They use the money for field trips for every grade. So it is a worthwhile cause... think of it that way. I always buy from them, even it I don't need the stuff.

8. In my day schools were funded
no need to bring kleenex snacks paper towels and sell worthless shit so schools can function. How bout we cut the real defense budget(includes funding wars) 10% and pay for universal health care and fund the schools?

13. Same here.
We never had to buy school supplies. Now I have to spend at least $100 per year on things the school district used to provide. Where, exactly, are all our school taxes going?

9. Ugh. One year my son wanted to win the most magazines sold because the prize was a limo ride to
McDonalds I think and he wanted to spend his $100+ birthday money to buy magazines so he could win. :-(

So glad those days are over.

10. September is just a money sinkhole for my family. Two kids doing fundraisers for school
(fortunately, they do gift wrap, which is actually useful), two kids registering for hockey (and then having to update equipment), two kids fundraising for hockey (gaaahhhh)...I want to go apply for a loan every September. I feel you!

11. Our elementary school just has a fun run for cash.
Sponsor each lap or make a donation. I like that.

14. We were constantly selling crap for our choir trips.
candy bars, wrapping paper, doughnuts, and those candles in the tall, sparkly jars (I think they depicted images of Jesus and other religious stuff).
