I burnt the hell out of my hand on a pot of pasta just now
I'm waiting for everyone to come home and eat, but I got a steam burn.

Any ideas for a home remedy for a minor, but painful burn?

2. I hadn't thought of pouring beer over it
I would think that the alkileinity of beer would make it worse.

Have you tried this before?

3. You don't pour it on the wound. You drink lots of it so you don't care about the pain

10. Thank you for taking it seriously.
I burned the hell out of my hand from the steam. I wasn't kidding and it is much appreciated that when someone asks a simple damn question, someone replies with a damn answer.

Mild burns -- immediately run cold water over em and then cool em with icepacks

You get big blisters, or skin sloughs off, or it's charred, or bones and tendons are stickin out, or such -- then you say, hell with the lounge! I'm seeing the doc

But mild burns, prompt cold water and an icepack will help

14. Aloe...doesn't help if you don't have it on hand, but that's my recommendation.
Do the cold water thing and when it calms down, if you have aloe, put aloe on it. That's what I've done in similar situations and it works.

Then learn how to cook pasta.

:hide:

Just kidding.

19. vinegar will stop the hurting
If you can't soak the area, make a poultice with cloth or paper towels, wet this down with vinegar and tape it down or tie it on your arm. Keep it wet with vinegar.

I believe the idea of ointment as treatment for a burn is out of date. Don't put butter on it, surely.

How big is the burn area?

20. and I have to tell you that yellow mustard will stop the hurt too
It's the turmeric in the mustard. I discovered this by accident, having burned my finger when making a hot dog in the broiler.

21. first aid from medline
FOR MINOR BURNS

If the skin is unbroken, run cool water over the area of the burn or soak it in a cool water bath (not ice water). Keep the area submerged for at least 5 minutes. A clean, cold, wet towel will also help reduce pain.
Calm and reassure the person.
After flushing or soaking, cover the burn with a dry, sterile bandage or clean dressing.
Protect the burn from pressure and friction.
Over-the-counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help relieve pain and swelling. Do NOT give children under 12 aspirin. Once the skin has cooled, moisturizing lotion also can help.
Minor burns will usually heal without further treatment. However, if a second-degree burn covers an area more than 2 to 3 inches in diameter, or if it is located on the hands, feet, face, groin, buttocks, or a major joint, treat the burn as a major burn.
Make sure the person is up to date on tetanus immunization

DO NOT

Do NOT apply ointment, butter, ice, medications, cream, oil spray, or any household remedy to a severe burn.
Do NOT breathe, blow, or cough on the burn.
Do NOT disturb blistered or dead skin.
Do NOT remove clothing that is stuck to the skin.
Do NOT give the person anything by mouth, if there is a severe burn.
Do NOT immerse a severe burn in cold water. This can cause shock.

23.  Submerge it in cold water
for about twenty minutes. Add a few ice cubes as the water warms. Each time you take your hand out it will feel better.

When I was a nurse someone brought homemade chicken broth to her friend who was a patient. She asked me to shake it before pouring some into a bowl in the nurses' station kitchen. When I pulled out the stopper I had nearly-boiling chicken broth shoot out on to my hand. I plunged in into the bowl of ice water that caught drips below the crushed ice machine- it hurt until I left it submerged for a while. Now I do the same whenever I get a burn- usually just carry a glass of ice water with my burned finger stuck in it for 10-20 minutes until the pain is greatly diminished.
