suggestions on thoughtful gift for mom and baby
My cousin's wife had her baby last month.

I wanted to send her something thoughtful. and maybe... useful?

I want her to know I care.
I don't know her all that well, and I wasn't raised with my cousins. I'm in Texas and they are in Virginia.

But she named her son after my cousin and my grandfather (middle name).

I just want to do something to keep the family ties together. My grandmother would have wanted that.

I don't have too much money to float on this, but perhaps a thoughtful gift would be nice.

Any suggestions?

2. A gift card where they registered (for baby). Wine and chocolates (for mom)
There's always more crap to buy and every little bit helps.

3. Books
If there's a book that you liked as a child, get them that. I always give books. I like to give an assortment from infant, toddler, to whatever age you like. We have farmers in our family so I get a barnyard animal theme. If they are a family with dogs, I go with that. Use your imagination! I am approaching 50 and I still have books that I read as a child.

4. If she registered somewhere, I'd check there first.
You can figure out what she's not been given yet, buy it, and have it shipped right to her if you like. A gift card to a large retailer is also welcome. If you really want the experience of getting, wrapping, and sending it yourself, then a book is always nice, and you cannot have enough onesies, receiving blankets, burp cloths, bibs, etc. Maybe one or two of those plus a little rattle or other sensory toy for the baby would be a nice gift.

5. my friend bought a little gift for baby, but brought me a lovely bath gel/oil
i thought that was so nice and had never thought of geting mom anything.

in one of our stored they sold a music thing in some animal, that hung over the crib. all you did was pull down on the animal for it to play, softly. that was a good one for my kids, so bought for others.

7. A handmade quilt ...
and request they turn it into a family keepsake - start a tradition to pass it for from generation to generation.

8. I got a friend's baby a stuffed animal that plays music.
He's well over a year old now, and he still goes to her, asking to have it wound up. I also got some of those onesies as has been suggested. But I never get clothing in the smallest sizes, since babies grow so fast. :)
