New partial, (denture) wearer here. Any suggestions? I figured out a few things.
First off I had the last 2 teeth on the bottom taken out over a week ago and even though they stuck the partial in my mouth at that time as soon as the Novocaine wore off I took out the partial.....because it freaking hurt!!!
I have learned these things though. One, when you are getting used to wearing dentures you can rub your gums down with Anbesol , (or that lidocaine mixture that the dentist uses to numb up your gum.) and two, You can take the partial out when you are real clear on where a pain spot is and use a grinding tool from a Dremel to slowly take off some of the denture that is poking you. I've gotten one spot in the front taken care of and another in the back where it is pinching is going to get fixed in a few minutes.
That's it so far. If I hadn't figured out a way to re-fit these damn things in myself I wouldn't be wearing them right now and I'd be on my way to looking really bad. I specifically watched the dentist use a tool that basically was a drill with a ball top on it to grind the denture down a little. So when I got home I found the same type of tool and did it myself because I was near tears in pain.
So any other hints or tips would be greatly appreciated and I hope I helped someone else with my brandy new tricks! I realize now that I've had these back teeth out I am either going to get used to wearing this partial and speaking clearly with it or look really bad when I smile wide. And I am too vain for that.
4. Can you try one of those metal grinder files that come with the Demel
kit like I did? I swear I would not have been able to wear them more than 2 more minutes if I had not taken them out and filed where they were pinching me. I slept with my in last night but just took them out to eat because the pain is too bad. But the area where my teeth were pulled is still swollen and not healed so I figured it is OK to take them out to eat right now, at least sometimes.
I had to get them last year because one tooth was loose and after x-rays they realized that my teeth were not in my jaw bone anymore due to genetic bone loss. I am only 46...wtf?
The first time they pulled 15 teeth in the back and then a few weeks later pulled the rest and put those things in my mouth. It was terrible. I would actually get tears in my eyes when I put them in and I thought I would never be without pain again.
The bottoms were the worst, but I found this stuff that you are supposed to use to make "old" dentures feel new again. It is in a tube and you put the tube in warm water which softens in and then you put that on the dentures. It really helped for a while because it was sort of soft and kept some of the pain away. I don't remember the name of it, but I'm sure it would be easy to find.
I also went to the dentist a few times when they hurt and he did his thing to make them feel a bit better. You paid for them and you should get your money's worth.
I still have to go get the bottom ones redone because they were a bit off so the dentist had to file down the back teeth and flatten them so I could close my mouth and he said he will get new ones made when my jaws settles.
Try to keep them in as much as possible because you need the jaw to "get use" to them.
7. Thanks for the tips as I am facing having all mine pulled

in the very near future. Most of my teeth are loose and I am dreading having to call the dentist. I am 72 years old and have had tooth problems most of my life. I have a full fixed bridge at the top and a partial fixed bridge at the bottom. They both came out after 15 years. I am keeping them in with dental adhestive which is a real pain in the neck because I am barely able to chew since chewing loosens them and I have to reglue them in each time I eat.
