4. There is a squirrel with no tail in my neighborhood.
I think a cat got to it since there are a lot feral cats here. And there are people who do not keep their cats indoors.

5. Black squirrels are common here.
I've seen tailless ones before. Could be genetic, most likely the result of a traumatic injury, probably a very close call with a tire or a predator.

6. Plenty of black squirrels in the DC suburbs
They're descendants of a bunch that were let loose at the National Zoo decades ago. We've got a few in our neighborhood.

FYI though, they are mating and we now have blacks with red tails and other combinations. Very cool.

8. Black squirrels are really Eastern grey squirrels...
with a genetic mutation. That's right, they're X-Squirrels.

13. black squirrels are fairly common
We have them around here in the Philly burbs. They don't mix much with the regular gray squirrels or seem to go too far from the tree they live in. We've had a family of them living in one of the trees near me for years and years. They seem to be a bit more shy around people than regular gray squirrels and prefer to live in less people congested or noisy places. Other than being black they look just like regular gray squirrels, but I think their tails are a wee bit less poofy.

I much prefer them over the gray ones since they aren't so much like rats in getting into garbage barrels or eating shredding porch furniture like the gray squirrels have gotten.

14. I never saw black squirrels until I moved ...
... to Chicago. They're not nearly as common as grey squirrels, but they are seen frequently here.
