8. I bow to your vastly superior knowledge. It must be extremely difficult keeping
those of us with less knowledge of all things musical on the straight and narrow!

9. If he was amplified he would clear city blocks.
This guy goes on vacation to a tropical island. As soon as he gets off the plane, he hears drums. He thinks "Wow, this is cool." He goes to the beach, he hears the drums, he eats lunch, he hears drums, he goes to a luau, he hears drums. He tries to go to sleep, yet he hears drums.

This goes on for several nights, and gets to the point where the guy can't sleep at night because of the drums. Finally, he goes down to the front desk.

When he gets there, he asks the manager, "Hey! What's with these drums. Don't they ever stop? I can't get any sleep."

The manager says, "No! Drums must never stop. It's very bad if drums stop."

"Why?"

"When drums stop...bass solo begins."

4. Cool.
I have a Fender Jazz Bass tuned in fifths.

I am a violinist so I can't think in fourths. Only in fifths. That
is why it's tuned in fifths. C-G-D-A like a cello.

10. OMG, I just got a bass a few months ago and have considered doing this. I played the violin for
years (ages 8-22) and played the string bass for one semester. I'm now playing around with an electric bass and am having a good time, but figure if I tune it to fifths I'd be much more comfortable on it and even be able to improvise better.

So tell me more! Does it work for you? Do you find it easier to play? Do you "transcribe" tabs for yourself, or work things out on your own?

16. I don't do tabs.
I can read bass clef since I started on piano at the age of five; picked up violin at age ten. Turned out my piano teacher is also an accomplished violinist, which is rare.

I can read bass clef or do lead sheets as in fake books.

Jazz bass with no frets is definitely easier to play. I have a hard time holding the thing up since I am a small person and have those little hands that go well on the violin. There are bars set into the fingerboard, so I have a visual guide but I still move my hands around a lot and go by ear.

Dear Hubby is a guitarist and he figured out what gauge strings to use.

6. I used to play bass way back in the Stone Age
Had a group in the DC area called "Clockwork Orange" and that was 3 years BEFORE the film came out.
I think the four of us were the only teenagers in the DC area who ever read the book.

It's surprising, but there are still some very passable instruments out there for not too much money.
If you know anyone who can work on them/restore them, you can sometimes really get a steal. My friends
in Dallas (www.HA.com) run vintage guitar auctions all the time, and if I had the time, the money and
a 20,000 square foot air conditioned warehouse, I'd own more guitars than Fox has lies.

11. Congrats and welcome to the fraternity!
I've played bass guitar for nearly 39 years.

FYI, www.talkbass.com is a great site for any inquiries about all things bass.
