Places nobody but you has been to
Edited on Fri Jun-24-11 09:38 PM by UTUSN
My ancient schoolteacher/sister, retired, has been everywhere - and I'm talking Stonehendge, gypsy caves in Spain, MOZART's hometown - and really MORE. (Tours... )

Nothing exotic, just DISNEY stuff.

Anyway, I'm thinking of places she has NEVER been to: Copper Canyon/Mexico, where I might be mutilated/ beheaded/ or ...

But, also, from Chihuahua/MX north to that other barbarian place, Arizona.

Then, in the Fall, to Lourdes. Thoughts? (And I know what I'm gettin into.)

3. Does a road trip through Cameroon count? Stayed at a resort built by
Nazi's during the war, toured villages, climbed around the falls which were filmed in Tarzan movie,
walked beaches of Kribi and took canoe up Lobe River into jungle to meet with Baka (pygmie) people. Lovely people and a beautiful country.

31. Most of the places I went weren't by choice
Edited on Sat Jun-25-11 10:33 PM by UTUSN
After the first 20 yrs of nowhere, the Navy opened up my world in many ways:

San Diego. Treasure Island/San Francisco. Sasebo, Japan. Saigon. Can Tho. Vung Tau. Cam Rahn Bay. Hong Kong. Subic Bay, Philippines. Guam. Yokahoma & Yokuska, Japan. Seattle. Bremerton, WA. Vancouver. Tijuana, Mexico. Acapulco. Panama Canal. Guantanamo Bay. Haiti. New Orleans. Jacksonville, FL. Norfolk, VA. Washington, D.C. Corpus Christi, TX.

Then over my working life, I'd take vacation in Mexico. Nuevo Laredo. Monterrey. Mexico City. Guadalajara. Zacatecas. Oaxaca. Vera Cruz. Puebla. Guanajuato. Saltillo.

Some of those places were pass-bys. Others were multiple times. A few were for extended periods.

Oh, forgot: After 20 some years of nowheresville again, in the past two years (but not again?) I forayed briefly on those tour things: Boston. Spain: Madrid, Seville, Valencia, Barcelona. Airports ugh: Newark and Heathrow.

18. Well, "just" me and--thousands of surfer types
Puerto Escondido, Mexico. Very crunchy, always a party, and low stress. That was my favorite place in my entire Tour de Mexico (which, admittedly, was rather limited, considering the size of the country).

Also, closer to home, the Finger Lakes in central/western New York State--the area rivals Vermont for autumn leaf-peeping with a fraction of the traffic. A bonus: Spook Hill, at the base of Canandaigua Lake, an optical-illusion spot. Put your car in neutral, take your foot off the gas, and it feels like it's going uphill backward. You can't do it just once. "Wait a minnit...lemme see that again..." :)

19. Punkydoodles Corners, ON Canada
Edited on Sat Jun-25-11 11:58 AM by auntAgonist
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punkeydoodles_Corners,_Ontario

Punkeydoodles Corners is an unofficial hamlet in the Wilmot Township of southwestern Ontario, in Canada, known for its strange name<1> and frequent sign theft.<2>

The origin of the name is somewhat disputed. Most claims date back to an inn and tavern located at the Corner during the late nineteenth century. The most frequently-cited legend claims that the local innkeeper had a habit of singing "Yankee Doodle", which sounded more like "Punkey Doodle" to the tavern guests.<1> Other stories link the name to an old Victorian word for frittering away time, or a nickname given to a lazy pumpkin farmer by his irritated wife.<2> "Corners" refers to both the geographical feature of the intersecting roads as well as the convergence of Waterloo, Oxford, and Perth regional boundaries.
A pillar erected in honour of Joe Clark's participation in 1982 Canada Day festivities.

The most prominent moment in Punkeydoodles Corners history was Canada Day 1982, when the Right Honourable Joe Clark was present for festivities. A post office was opened for one day to issue commemorative stamps.<2>

While common spelling and punctuation vary, the official name is "Punkeydoodles Corners".<3>

It's this large Fort from the French and Indian War. I went in February a couple years ago and was literally the only one there. Pretty surreal walking around a fort by ones self. 35. OK....
....obviously someone has been there before, but in I belive, 1958, living in Nome Alaska, my oldest brother, an Explorer Scout took me about 20 miles out on the tundra near the bearing sea to an old lookour post from the Korean war era. We slept in the lookout tower, and the next day I got busy with a wrecked Sabre Jet airplane, missing it's front wings. It didn't stop me from sitting in the cockpit, and living one of the greatest adventures I've ever known. When we left, I tried to drag an old 50 caliber machine gun home with a rope. Got about five feet when I realized maybe that was not such a good idea. Thanks.

37. Krasnaya Polyana, Russia.
I went there in 1986, before the USSR fell, as part of a peace group, with my grandmother. We also visited Moscow, Leningrad (now back to St. Petersburg), and Soviet Georgia, but the real point of the trip was to visit Krasnaya Polyana, three-and-a-half hours straight up in the Caucus Mountains, the sister town of Black Mountain, NC, where my grandmother was living. It was a trip of a lifetime and they were thrilled to meet us. It's quite remote, inaccessible by anything but helicopter in the winter, and the events for next Winter Olympics will be held there. :)

the Message context, while not that much better, suggested to list unusual, out-of-the-way, exotic places that *not-that-many* people have been to. And my inclusion of Lourdes was obviously not in context. I can post some really precisely worded things, too, besides my more erratic ones!1

51. I'll give my best shot
but I think hundreds of thousands if not millions been to these places.

Wooded areas in Ft. Leonard Wood and Ft. Lewis. I went hiking in Sedona one time. Also been to Grand Canyon. Also went camping in the Rockies several times and even climbed a mountain. So I think on top of some unnamed mountain would perhaps qualify.

Outside the US maybe some spots in Kuwait/Iraq but mostly those were bases where hundreds of thousands of American troops been through, thousands of coalition troops, thousands of civilians, and thousands (probably hundreds of thousands) TCNs. Not to mention locals who either traveled through or lived in areas before bases.

57. Not exactly NOBODY allowed...
...but I was given a tour of several areas of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library (in Simi Valley, CA) which are off limits to the general public, by the Director of the Library (this was in the early 90s).

One area had the massive mainframe computer used during the Reagan Administration, taken from the White House and installed in the Library. The Director told me that the computer had to be kept in operating condition and running at all times, in case there was data on it that needed to be accessed.

Another area was a very large room with rows of metal shelves, which were loaded with hundreds of items which were gifts to Reagan/Reagan Admin., by foreign Heads of State, diplomats, etc., (such as some hand-tooled elaborately decorated leather horse saddles presented to Reagan by, I think it was, the President of Mexico), as well as everyday people who sent gifts because they loved the gipper so much, I guess. They were required to keep these items, catalog them, and put them on a shelf. There were some wacky items on the shelves, such as a giant ball of twine along with little hand-made arts and crafts kinda stuff.

They had just taken down an exhibit based on the anti-war demonstrations of the sixties, particularly the police riot at the '68 Democratic convention, so I was able to take home some foamcore mounted black & white glossy photos of demonstrators and cops battling each other.

While I was not and still am no fan of St. Ronnie (I loathe the dude and his legacy), it was, nonetheless, a very interesting experience. Also, fwiw, the Library Director who showed me around was a "liberal Democrat," or so I was told.

i've been to a couple no other tourist has been to, so i don't think it would be a good idea to post that information since i have stalkers

copper canyon is far from a top secret tourist destination but it may be relatively quiet right now with the state dept. tourist advisory aga. northern mexico, i dunno

when you go, post pix!

66. Lake Agnes Tea House, Lake Louise Alberta. I worked there for a summer. 2 1/2 mile hike up
a mountain. No power. Hearty fare. Gorgeous view of Lake Louise.

71. I've been to places that I can't (not allowed to) say. Anyone else?
And as Forest Gump says, "and that is all I have to say about that"

It's closed now - even the Chinese have limits on the amount of commercialism they'll allow (though, it was there for a few years)

81. Really, I wish I could have a do-over on the Subject wording.
Edited on Wed Jun-29-11 03:23 PM by UTUSN
The context of the Message part of the O.P. was that this sister has been to all these tourist, Disney-like tour places and I was looking for edgy places that FEW people ever go, or even if thousands of military people go to a place, MOST people don't go. I'm sorry for the crummy wording. I'm an erratic poster and am frustrated that my worst threads usually get more longevity than my good ones.

Thanks for not being snarky about it. The topic seems to be of interest, so I wish the topic itself could get a fresh start without my clumsiness involved. Iow, I have wished for days that MY thread had gone away.
