I rented the first season of the 'the Wire' today. Is it hard to get into or was
it immediately amazing?

1. It took me a little time, but was really worth it
I think I started watching a later season and then went back to watch from the beginning. I also remember trying to watch "The Corner" and couldn't get into that until after I watched The Wire; in fact, I delayed watching The Wire because I had confused The Corner with it. LOL.

Now I've seen them both, all episodes, and like them all very much.

2. it starts out slow, gathering speed over the season
about 3/4 of the way through the first season, you will figure out you're watching the greatest tv show ever made. then the next four will be a breeze.

4. Well... Second greatest
It suffered from a severe lack of Walton Goggins who helped make The Shield a better show :D

6. stay with it
it's like a piece of fabric - it starts out with all these loose threads seemingly all over the place and slowly they start getting all entwined and knitted together. there's a lot going on. hope you enjoy it.

9. It had me from the theme song on...
You might be surprised to find that many of the
actors are BRITISH!!!

Look up Idris Elba...he now has a show on
British TV called "Luther".

His understated performance as Stringer Bell
is AMAZING.

10. One thing you're not going to see in the actual episodes is endless recapping and exposition.
That's just part of what makes it great. The writers don't use artificial devices to make it easier to follow.

You've got to invest your attention to "get it".

11. Took me until the second season...
...I was accustomed to "The Sopranos" and "NYPD Blue" and went to The Wire looking for more of the same.

It is not more of the same. It's far too subtle to be compared to either of those shows, and for me, it required some patience in watching.

12. we just started watching this
on season 2 right now. It pretty much grabbed us from the beginning. Once the team is assembled and the characters start to flesh out, you realize you're watching something remarkable.

Plus, it's really dark. And I like that in my entertainment.
