FOOD PORN 06-14-11: "The Phyllis Sandwich" (avocado, cream cheese, egg)
A Sandwich A Day: The 'Phyllis' at The Local Yolk

Posted by Carey Jones, June 14, 2011 at 11:30 AM

Avocado and cream cheese had never occurred to me as elements of an egg sandwich, but now that I've had it, I'm a huge fan. At Austin's The Local Yolk cart, the "Phyllis" ($7) stacks those ingredients in precise, even layers—a slim fried egg that's just barely set in the middle, buttery, even slices of avocado, and a substantial layer of cream cheese—between slices of white bread that gets a great crunch to counter the soft middle. While all those elements are creamy, they're not particularly heavy, making this vegetarian sandwich satisfying without settling too heavily in the stomach.

1. A local sandwich shop used to do a lean breast of turkey
with cream cheese and avocado, cranberry sauce and blue cheese. They called it "The Wonder Woman Special." Jus' sayin'

6. Texas? "Vegetarian"?
In Texas, doesn't "vegetarian" mean "deep fried"? ;)

8. I've been in Texas many times - and as a vegetarian. They think cows are a vegetable.
Okay, okay. There's a strong argument to be made that cows ARE vegetables, but not from a food perspective.

I dont think this counts as Vegetarian cos it has fried egg in it.

12. Ovo-Lacto...
Some vegetarians eat eggs and dairy products. Vegans, on the other hand, wouldn't eat it.

13. I see
I guess I was looking at Vegetarian as defined in the south Asian context, where Vegetarians are heavily into dairy products, but avoid poultry

14. I am a vegetarian and I eat eggs and dairy, and that sandwich looks yummy.
You are right about vegans. They do not eat any animal products. I eat dairy and eggs because no animals are killed for dairy products.
