I guess I just don't get it.

I don't think she is even very creative - it's all be done before. And better.

2. yes
Tastes differ. There's lots of popular stuff i don't understand, but GaGa is indeed creative.

Bad Romance is one of the best songs of the past decade. She makes good, catchy dance pop. And she's not afraid to put a political (progressive) message in her music.

8. Heh. I can't think of Bad Romance now
without thinking of THIS:

As for Lady GaGa, not a huge fan but her music is VERY catchy light and fun...which is what pop music is about. I think she's way more talented than Brittney Spears or any of that ilk.

7. Hasn't everything been done before though?
With those standards, no one would like anything current. Gaga is this generation's Madonna. Every generation should have someone that shocks people.

And I actually think she is at least as good as Madonna, and she is creative. Who is more creative? She's just as creative as Madonna was.

And I don't own a single song by her.

Little monsters live in this household.

Her #1 charity and cause is homeless youth, and she advocates non-stop for gay youth.

She is awesome, love, love, love her. So nice to see a celebrity use her fame in a positive manner.

13. She's got the basics: 1) MELODIC songs, and 2) a good voice
It comes down to anthemn-like/hook melodies first of all. "Bad Romance" has a soaring chorus that could have a horde of Aussies or cricket fans singing all together and swinging beer in time. Plus, she has a full-throated, resonant voice. She's Italian!1 She's got opera in her veins.

That said, her antics give me the creeps, but since I hear music and don't look at videos, this works out fine.

As for Madonna, I totally missed that train at the station. I never got melody/voice from her, but I wasn't paying attention, either.

27. Yes, and she has a great story. She was told she was too "ethnic" to ever make it as a pop singer
She trained herself musically, worked on her impressive vocal cords, and put herself out there like a furious little hurricane. She was also severely bullied when she was in high school, and she talks about all of this in her concert on HBO. She is also very pro-gay rights.

That's the difference, plus, as my daughter tells me...Lady Gaga really CARES about her fans and goes out of her way to make them feel special (whatever that means).

For what it's worth, she's got a great voice (so much better than Madonna) and writes her own songs (at least that's what they say).

18. I like her concerts up to a point but not intersted in her other personalities
I think she's creative and interesting to watch during a concert though it can sometimes go on too much, and I love that she's an advocate for the LGBTQ (sorry if I did it all wrong) community. But her personality off the stage seems somewhat schizophrenic, like she has more than one personality which she can 't cope with so she exaggerates in order to deal with it. Maybe just one of her personalities is the showman.

20. I like her.
She has an excellent voice. She is a far better singer than Madonna. Her mentor is Cyndi Lauper, who also has a beautiful voice.

As somebody upthread said, she's Italian, she's got opera in her veins!

Dance pop. It's been done before but she at least knows about verses, choruses, and melodies, unlike rap & Hip-hop.

I have absolutely no understanding of the weird costumes and such, because I'm old (Gaga is about a year younger than my daughter).

It's an ironclad fact that anyone who's truly original in music will more than likely die a speedy and unprofitable death.

The issue isn't whether or not she's doing something "original" (whatever that might mean. The issue is whether not she's doing what she's doing well. And I'd say that she certainly is.

33. The "originality" fetish is so annoying.
It's a crutch used by snobs to bash everyone else with, even though the "original" stuff is as boring as watching pain dry. It's why I don't read much "literary fiction", preferring Sci-Fi instead.

I actually don't like her or her music at all. But I like a lot of bands that aren't original or unique. And I'm guility of lobbing that critique at her. But I usually only do so when someone tries to convince me how brilliant she is or that somehow what she is doing is different or better than any number of other pop artists out there. It's really not. It's done well for what it is, but it's not this head and shoulders difference over most other stuff out there in the genre.

39. Absolutely true. Often times different and unique are condemned as bad as well
Look at Geddy Lee for instance. He is actually a very good singer. But because his vocals are much different sounding than almost anyone, he is often condemned as bad or unlistenable. If you want to say his style is not to your taste fine, but just saying he's bad because he sounds different is a shitty shitty argument.

31. Apparently she's not as popular this week.
I foresee a re-invention in the very near future. The problem for her is that once you've gone out as far on the limb as she has, where do you go from there? Time will tell if she has staying power.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way set another record this week, but not one that Gaga's team will be happy about. Sales of the album dropped off by 84% from its sizzling (but discount-inflated) opening week. That's the the steepest drop-off in sales, expressed in a percentage basis, of any of the 17 albums that sold 1 million units in a week in Nielsen SoundScan history.
Gaga's album sold 174,000 copies this week, down from 1,108,000 last week, when sales were goosed by a two-day, 99-cent sale at Amazon.

Gaga wants people to talk about her, so she pushes people's buttons. She reminds me most of early Bowie and Elton John. Eventually, she'll write great songs that I might actually enjoy listening to.
