meet my new pal, Joe
Joe the Horse

I haven't been riding in ages. I bought this goofy (but gorgeous) paint horse (Magic is his name) a couple years ago and rode him for most of a year but then had some health problems and got out of shape and just couldn't deal with him. Getting old sucks. I really needed to either get somebody to work him over for a week or two to burn off some of his excess energy OR get another safer ride until I could get in shape to start on Magic again. Well I happened to luck onto a sweet old guy named Joe. He used to work on a guest ranch so he is calm enough for anybody to ride, but he isn't herd bound or too barn soured and goes out alone just fine. They ran cattle on the place too so he knows what they are, if not much about working them. No matter we do most stuff on foot anyway or have a crew.

He's no show horse, (and needs a little more feed put to him) and he is freaking tall, but I have to use a rock to get on the rock to get on anyway so...

I am happily - and literally - back in the saddle again. The dogs are sure loving it - MAJORLY beats running behind the pick up in the dust:rofl:

13. that 'horseback cam' look almost made me keel over with nostalgia
and longing.

Damn. The terrain looks very similar to my SoCal riding days. I miss them terribly; haven't been in the saddle for almost 20 years.

Joe looks like a fine fellow. Glad you two found each other. Give him a rub on his velvety nose for me.

25. I know that feeling.
being around the bums I feed every day was hard. When Dusty and his crew come out I feel pretty lost, not so much working in the corrals, but when they trot off to make a circle I have a hard time not breaking down. Getting left behind in that situation was pretty emotional for me. I am determined to be back on the round-up crew again by this fall.

I'll be taking some more pix like that - couldn't do that on the paint - too prancy dancy, no way to do photography on him!

6. Great post Kali.
I've been wondering about you and the fires. I'm guessing the bad ones are to your southeast and northeast. I know the Chiricahuas are in trouble and also around Alpine and Eager.

Hopefully the winds will continue to take the smoke east of you. That sky sure looks blue in the pics.

Good luck with you new bud, Joe.

And good luck with fire season.

Cheers.

21. thanks
the worst day for smoke so far was Monday - and I think it was coming from the fires near Tubac so from the SW, actually. Smelling it every day and getting thick haze in the afternoons.

this was the same afternoon as the pic with the saddle, same mountain in the background through the trees!

me too. He kind of fell into my lap - and this was good, because I probably wouldn't have bought him if I had gone looking - I tend to flip out and buy inappropriately. Flashy paints are a severe weakness, I have finally ascertained. (after about 4 of them over my life)

12. Is he a Strawberry Roan, Kali?
I love the color. Give him a gentle pat and a hug from me. Our family of absolute greenhorns had the most wonderful time on a dude ranch one summer when the kids (and we!) were younger. The 63 Ranch, south of Livingston Montana. Gorgeous country lovely people sweet horses. Hours of riding every day. Of course, the only work we had to do was stay on the horses. But it was certainly work enough for us!

29. I guess - a VERY light red roan is what we came up with
a lot of times horses that are used for "greenhorns" can be spoiled in terms of needing to be with other horses all the time, or just in handling because of always walking in a line behind another horse, but he does fine out alone.

I'm working up to "hours" plural. I am badly out of shape. 90 minutes starts to feel kind of painful at this point. Used to go all day with a break for lunch and maybe a short nap. Miss being in that kind of shape for sure.

he's getting the feed poured to him, unfortunately for my budget, but he's working so it's not as bad as the other bums I am feeding.

Magic:

his craigslist shot (aka how I got sucked in)

last summer?

weird shot mowing the lawn, that looks photoshopped

I can see why you got sucked in :D

about the mane ...

they make an equine mane tamer:

http://www.equinenow.com/store-item-33671

but, before I bought one, I would wash the mane and braid it all to the one side and see if that would help . . .

gosh, I miss the horses.
