1. Yeah. They used to actually play music in the late 70's and early 80's.
I think it is a right-wing hack station now.

2. Amazingly (since I've only been to Detroit once) ....yes
I must've been about 14 and when my family settled into the motel, the first thing my brother and I did was, of course, look for a decent rocknroll station.

3. It may have been a lot of places hearing it too
We moved from Detroit to Lima, Ohio and it played. :)

4. I grew up (using the term loosely) near Chicago and loved listening to out of town rocknroll
stations at night as kid, but never heard CKLW till the one family trip to Detroit. I remember listening to WKYC out of Cleveland , and sometimes could even pick up WBZ from Boston...Might've been a 50,000 watt local station on a similar frequency to CKLW or something.

6. I used to listen to CKLW at night in the 60s
If I just pointed the transistor radio in the right direction... and if all in the skies cooperated... CKLW loud and clear.

Also used to listen to WOWO (Fort Wayne IN) the same way.

Music, and music hits, were SO regional in the 60s that even living in NYC, there was a lot of music I never would have heard had I not done my nighttime AM signal searches.
