One of my miniature dachshunds just showed me what she was bred for..
We have full grown possum holed up under a storage building where it would have to be taken apart to get the possum out. My two mini doxies have been barking around the building for over a week now, I got a glimpse of it a while back which is why I know, it's been getting in the garbage at night and being a bit of a nuisance.

I let my dogs out about an hour ago for their evening run, when I went back out to collect them I thought one had a big rat shaking the hell out of it, turns out it was an adolescent possum and it was pining for the fjords..

The dog that caught the possum is sweet natured in the extreme to kids, adults and other dogs but she purely loves chasing anything that will run. She didn't want to give up her prize for a while, growled at me and the other doxie when we came close and then scooted under a car with her kill. She's *never* growled at a human before although she does growl at the other one if she gets a really tasty tidbit sometimes because the other one is a canine eating machine who will snatch it if she gets the chance.

The red one caught the possum..

3. Good for her!
My dog is very sweet natured, too. She thinks everyone is her friend. But she behaves the same way if she catches anything she has been chasing. They are still hunters, aren't they?

4. We have a golden lab here that belongs to another family member..
She's incredibly fast and catches more birds than the cats do, she's also done in a few squirrels. We're trying to discourage her from that but as you say, they're hunters.

I think my doxie went under the building to get the possum.

5. She wanted to keep the prize!
We have two mini-doxies, a dapple and a double-dapple and they are a real pair of hams. The female is the one who never gives up, she likes to run the show. I swear they are like tiny rottweilers in disguise.

Yours are so beautiful!

6. Thank you...
And now I know where your screen name came from..

Yes, they all have their own personalities, doxies can be aggressive pugnacious little beasts, I don't think my red one knows the meaning of fear but the black and tan is pretty timid until she's chasing something and gets the adrenalin going.

7. When our female dapple was still a puppy...
I took her w/me on vacation to a friend's farm in VA, where she proceeded to chase one interesting llama for the next few days. Little did I know that this doxie's "moxie" could be possibly be so big, hehe. It was one of those things you had to see to believe--the llama was very interested in her so they played cat-and-mouse games together (you could tell the llama knew it was a game but Bijou took it soooo seriously!).

8. That is indeed what they were bred for.
Some things are just innate.
