My dogs LOVE LOVE LOVE coffee. Will it hurt them?
I can never drink an entire cup of coffee, because one of dogs I serve will beg mercilessly until I give them the last sip or two in the cup. Mrs. Bake drinks her coffee with CoffeeMate and Splenda, and one of the dogs prefers that to my "hot black and sweet" brew - but he'll take mine if that's all he can get!

So I ask: Is coffee bad for dogs?

Oh ... one of the dogs, the lhasa matriarch (who is 14 years old now - in human years) not only loves coffee but also bourbon & coke. She also has a bit of a taste for beer.

Spoiled? Not much ...

:hi:

1. Teh Google says caffeine is toxic for dogs.
But that you'd have to give your dog a lot of coffee for it to get to toxic levels. As long as you are offsetting it with the bourbon, should be ok.

2. Muffin is the only one that gets teh bourbon!
If I sit down on the couch with a cocktail glass, she is immediately right there beside me (and otherwise, she claims she can't jump up on the sofa any more!) and all friendly and stuff - not her usual snarly old lady routine. So I give her a sip or three. It seems to put her in a good mood.

3. It isn't good for them, but do you really want dogs that are wired and have to pee?

5. It doesn't seem to do that to them.
They are very well housebroken and seem to do just fine. Of course, they seldom turn down an opportunity to go out in the yard!

As for Muffin, I try not to let her get sloppy drunk ...

7. A puppy I got in '81 decided to sample some drinks we had sitting on the floor by the couch.
She got absolutely shitfaced. I have to admit that it was amusing to watch her fail at trying to jump up on the couch (as in smashing her snout into the front), but I WAS a bit worried about her surviving the incident. Damn did she have a hangover the next day.

9. "Dogs That Are Wired And Have To Pee"...my all-time favorite Pearl Jam album.
Seriously, some people like "Vitalogy," and while it's a great album, it can;t come close to the emotional highs of Eddie Vedder's performance on "Dogs That Are Wired and Have To Pee."

I'll be listening to that one tonight, for SURE!

11. I sincerely hope you are joking about the album title.

Although one of my favorite song titles is "I Promise Not To Cum In Your Mouth" - Frank Zappa (On Edit: This is entirely instrumental)

Another cool one, but only if you have the album jacket, is Steve Hackett's "Please Don't Touch" because it has a disclaimer to the effect of "This song should only be listened to at the highest possible volume your stereo can muster and not by people with heart conditions or in a severely hallucinogenic state of mind".

8. My dog likes to eat poop....so I think yours will be just fine with coffee.
Though I wouldn't give them much. Just finishing off your last sip each day is fine but I wouldn't give them more than an ounce or so per day maximum. I would be more concerned with the splenda than the coffee.

10. It's the caffeine in coffee and chocolate that's bad, along with some other chemicals.
Carbonated drinks are tough, too, but your animal may be strong enogh to live with the effects on the heart and nerves.
