One of my dogs just told the other: "I love you."
Edited on Wed May-18-11 08:37 AM by KurtNYC
They were playing head bite on the floor and they sort of lay in each others arms. They gently bite each other's necks and lips and they sort of sing back and forth to each other. And I was sort of tuning it out but then the female said "aye-ruv-ewe" (!) and that got my attention. it was fairly clear.

They are littermates and the female is more verbal than the male. She has this funny little voice and he has a wider range. He does a kind of didgeridoo low thing some times. Both do the kind of singing you hear from coyote pups.

I'm crazy? ..well here is the female saying "go away!" She was waking up and she does all this cute stuff so I have the camera right in her face and she says "go away!" (click photo for link to 15 second vid at photobucket)

1. Look at those faces!
I wouldn't be surprised -- do you tell them you love them a lot? If they hear those same words at the same time they're being slathered with affection from you, she could very well be vocalizing the same thing, even to fellow dogs. Dogs and cats are supposed to have the intelligence of toddlers (though we all know they're smarter than that in many ways) - toddlers sure as hell understand words and talk... why not your dogs? Especially ones that are very tuned in to you.

3. Of course they understand words - like their names or "Fancy Feast!" :-D
I had two cats years ago who were so smart, it was almost scary.

4. they are in many ways the smartest dogs I have ever had
and they imitate me in a variety of ways. I tell her "I love you" about 50 times a day so she could be imitating that. Saw the talking Husky videos after I started to research this a little more, and it seems very possible. But I'm still in denial maybe. It's too weird but so are A LOT of things these dogs do. She loves pushing buttons on things. Even things she has never seen before. And if it is a button that triggers a human voice she will do it over and over. She hits the button on the answering machine about once a day. It's like she is checking for messages. She doesn't turn and look at me for reward when she does it. She will just sit there listening to the machine.

She hits the buttons on my printer and it beeps. She has a Fisher Price toy that is like the old Speak and Spell -- it has a wheel that spins and then it says "Baby" and makes a baby noise (which sounds more like a baby dolphin to me). It has "Cat" "Dog" "Mouse" She loves it! She will hit buttons on the middle of playback and make it jump so it creates sentences that aren't really in the hardware. Kind of like that toy phone video that went viral. But she makes this thing say "I love..Lamb!" Sometimes she will hit the button that triggers the sound of a barking dog and it's like she is Stephen Hawking! I have video of that but it isn't up yet.

She is highly social. Loves people, babies, other dogs, cats, birds. Has her head out the front window of our apt which overlooks the street and she just can't get enough. (I love her.)

10. I can tell (that you love her / them)
:)

I continue to be amazed how interactive, sensitive and caring my cats are. Have had dogs and cats throughout my life and love 'em all.

6. That is so cool!
Yeah, I think, if you say that you love your dog enough times and she or he knows what you mean by the tone, sure, if they are that intelligent, they could figure out a way to pass it on. I give animals credit for a lot more intelligence than most humans think they possess. Depends on the animal, though, of course (and I include critters like birds and dolphins in the "animal" category although I know that strictly speaking, they aren't mammals).

I think it's neat that you have such a close link to your dogs and that they have you, too. The button-pushing thing - hilarious! What a good dog!

8. They are adorable, but I don't have to tell you that!
I took the liberty of looking at, and listening to, "Jurassic Pups" in the related videos, because it looked like it could show the head bite game ....I was not disappointed!
I love their voices!

11. thanks. it has been a unique experience to raise littermates together
I have had 2 dogs at a time before and really liked the dynamic.

they sing, the speak Wookie and they seem to imitate English on occasion. I think the female sounds like a classic 15YO Valley Girl -- "Go Awaaaay !" I love and feed them well and they keep me entertained.

taught our first dog how to say "Hello". It was so funny the first time I heard her say it. Your dogs sound like alot of fun! Beautiful animals too. :)
