He might be the first.

(Of course it would be just my luck that, having said THAT, dozens of War covers would suddenly be brought to my attention).

(on edit)

Have you got a link for that? And did you mean Nick Winters the weightlifter?

Nick Winters was Bill Murray's "lounge singer" character on SNL, and he massacred all kinds of tunes in his skits.

But there are a lot of covers of "Low Rider" out there...

47. hahaha!
Awful, really awful.

What did they think a toke was? They remind me of my sweet, pious Aunt Bee-like mother-in-law, may she rest in peace, who used to cheerfully say "c-cksucker!" at the drop of a hat, till one of her daughters finally took her aside and clued her in as to what it meant. She would use it like this: "The gravy is being a c-cksucker and thickening up too fast" and "I adore those frilly curtains, but I'll bet they're c-cksuckers to iron."

I suppose because the lyrics include "sweet Jesus" and "sweet Mary," Gail and Dick think it's a fine religious song. Dumb asses.

I was raised in Oklahoma and tend to pronounce the word "naked" as "nekkid." I'm afraid I'm a bad influence on my Swiss mother-in-law, who speaks pretty good English...except for the word "naked."

ETA: My MIL is also now prone to outbursts of "Goodness gracious!" and "Good lord!"

I tell you this because I remember. I was around ten and didn't know what a 'toke' was yet, had never heard of pot . . . . it's true!!!

It was something to do with a subway token or a bus token.

Of course I don't believe it but he really did say it.

I'm probably in the minority, but I can't stand Karen's voice. You gotta remember in the 60s, white middle-class parents hated Rock 'n Roll because it sounded too black. We'd gotten past the "race music" phase of the 50s, with Elvis and such putting a paler face on it, but the subtext was still that if you sang a certain way and used too much syncopated rhythm, it was as unacceptable as curly hair and sexy full lips.

So the scared middle-class white folks would hang onto anyone whose voice had been dipped in a vat of chlorox, who's beats were straight on 4/4 and who wrung all the "soul" out of every song they did. Karen Carpenter was their poster girl. And she was a DRUMMER, WTF???

Bad enough ANYONE covering Beatles songs (leave perfection alone, 'kay?) but this is Music in Hell. Don't believe me???

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsgj4xcxXyA

Honestly, I almost think Sarah Palin would be a better lead vocalist.

(edited cuz I wrote "who's" instead of "whose" Would've needed to arrest myself, being the grammar police 'n all)

46. I think part of the problem with the "Because the Night" cover
is that Natalie and Patti come from entirely different environments and radically different places in the class system-Natalie's family, unless I miss my guess, were at least comfortably middle-class and Patti's were proles.
