Marvin Gay gone 20 years today...what a voice was silenced that day
Was just listening to Marvin yesterday, and then on MPR today there was an interview with an author of a new book on Marvin Gay's life and music and demons.
Best male R&B voice ever, I think...beautiful.

3. He had a voice that was smooth as treacle.
This song is as true today as it was back then.

What's Going

Mother, mother
There's to many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today - Yah

Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going
Ya, what's going on
Ah, what's going on

(Background music and conversation)
In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on
Right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me,
So you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
I’ll tell you Ya, what's going on - Uh
Ah, what's going on
Right on baby
Right on baby

4. Ahhh Marvin
"Let's Get It On"-arguably the best slow "bootknocking" song ever.

8. Yeah Marvin and Sam Cooke are about my two favorites
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 01:32 AM by nothingshocksmeanymo
both died very tragic deaths.

Trouble Man and Let's Get It On (LP's) were BOTH so radical for their time...

11. I never realized the power of Marvin Gaye
Until I saw some film of him performing live, made sometime in the late 60s I reckon. Jesus Harold Christ!!!! Marvin had that audience in the palm of his hand. It was a cross between church and an orgy.

I have watched Al Green and Otis Redding, but Marvin Gaye made them look like they were backing up!!! He may well have been

The Man.
