How do you 'bold' text in a post?

I've tried everything I can think of and can't make portions of text bold, or italicized, etc. What am I missing?

Just as I was typing that question, it occurred to me that maybe I need to compose a post in MS Word, then cut and paste.
Is that it?

Actually if you just yell IT WILL ALL BE IN CAPS but if you scream almost to the point of head explosion you can get it in bold
