Remy kitty update...
The kitty that adopted me didn't want to go down to the basement and use his litterpan..back story..

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=9616604&mesg_id=9616604

Anyway, since I posted this, Remy has no problem going up to and sticking his nose in my Lulu's face. He doesn't seem afraid of her. My other beastie Izzie is another story, he still seems unsure of her. But for the last couple of days he lays on the furniture, walks past them etc. and for the most part doesn't seem scared. YAY the dogs and kitty are going to co-exist.

But still no litter pan, I still had to take him down stairs...

UNTIL...

tonight..he went down and used his pan and ate then came back up stairs. I've never had this issue with a cat before, but I'm taking this as a very positive sign. Any kitty peeps wanna weigh in on this?

He's also gained weight since being here with me. He was very underweight. I've had him neutered, and am brushing him every day to every other..I think at least part maine coon. He's very vocal and friendly.

2. Sometimes it takes a while for them to get the idea, but then they
are all right.

3. Great news.
Sounds to me like he's settled in perfectly.
(As a devoted kitty person, I'm thrilled for you.)

4. A quick question...
You said he used his pan and ate downstairs. Is his food near the litter box? If so, move it away. That could be part of the issue. Cats don't like to eat next to their toilet any more than you or I do. Otherwise, no telling what the problem is. He might have some issues with stairs. You don't know what happened before you took him in. Whatever the case, it sounds like you're doing well on your own.

6. No his food is at one end and his pan...
at the other. I was thinking he didn't want to walk past the dogs crate, but even when they weren't in it he wouldn't go down. He has no issues going upstairs and coming back down. Matter of fact, it was my upstairs bathroom he had two accidents in, and if I had the room for his pan I'd put it in there. But there is absolutely no room, it's a small bathroom.

Maybe he's had a bad experience with basements, like you said don't know what happened before he came to me. I'm hoping he'll continue to go down and do his thing. At night I have to shut the door to the laundry room side, to keep him in and I don't like doing that. I want him to be able to roam the house, that's what cats are supposed to do.

5. My brother's dog and cats were still a little wary of each other a month into living together. But
they got over it. Now they mostly ignore each other or the dog gets a little jealous when the cats get attention.

7. I think that's what's going to happen here....
the cat is still a little skittish, but more so with one dog than the other. Kitty has really come out of his shell, I'm gonna be optimistic and say I think it's going to be ok.

9. Some kittehs and puppies
have a fear of stairs that are open, and usually that is the case with basement stairs. I've run into that before with some of mine in the past. I think it may be a depth perception issue, until they figure it out.

Glad things are settling down for you.
