I know this isn't a big deal to some of you, but a whole frozen stock pond around here is freaking RARE. :scared: :scared: :scared:

1. How thick is the ice?
Smart dog, I seem to remember something about Piaget's theory of cognitive development. Dog is smart enough to know the water has changed, or something like that.

2. I'm going to say an inch and a half or two there near "shore"
Edited on Sat Feb-12-11 11:20 AM by Kali
I chopped a hole with a crappy hoe that was in the back of the truck and it was kind of hard to do! that thing out on the ice behind Lupe was a big chunk of mesquite I tossed out to try and make her go after it - didn't seem to dent or crack anything out there either.

You should have seen the crowd of little grey birds that descended on the hole for a drink though!

4. She was hesitant to go out too far?
Very smart girl indeed. Ha! The birds went south to avoid this sort of cold, so much for that.

6. she's no lab, that's for sure!
she had to have the other dog show her how to even go that far out when it was just water. I don't think she has actually been deep enough to swim yet (just got her in October) will see when it warms up and I can go out and show her - the other dog isn't a swimmer either, but he likes to get all wet and muddy.

3. Good morning, my dear Kali!
Great pictures!

It's funny...the water doesn't look frozen.

I'm surprised the temps got down low enough for that to happen...

:hi:

Thursday the 3rd we hit 5.9F hear at the house! Must be some kind of record. Crazy. Two days later I was barefoot in the afternoon for a few hours!

7. Wow that looks like it'd be great ice skating
(if it's thick enough) perfectly clear of snow w/no ice buckles and bumps that I can tell. And it's see-through! Really cool.

Is it normal for you guys to see that pond freeze? Strange weather everyone seems to be having. Lupe seems to be enjoying it though. :-)

9. not normal at all!
I've seen the edges freeze, and our troughs freeze over at least a couple times a year, but I have never seen the whole surface on any of the ponds freeze. (we have three that usually hold over the winter)

there was no snow with that cold snap - it was VERY weird, indeed
