That was beautiful. They contributed their own quite wonderful ability to harmonize...but never tried to turn it into a "LOOK AT ME LISTEN TO ME THIS IS ALL ABOUT ME" moment. Thank you. I'd just about given up on "celebrity" renditions of the National Anthem. And, by the way, I was perfectly able to accept that Christina A. screwed up the lyrics . It was all the ego-driven "ornamentation" that annoyed me. And she's not the first one to do it.
I was admonished by another DUer (don't recall who) who, in response to my saying that Christina A. had no grasp of singing, insisted that she was an extremely skilled singer.
I don't call vocal masturbation singing never mind forgetting the words.
4. Actually, Ms. Aguilera IS a very good singer, better than most pop artists today.
But what she was doing on Sunday was not singing. It was a misguided attempt at impressing us all with her vocal gymnastics, and it resulted in miserable failure.
Let's hope that next year, they can go back to finding someone who won't show off and who will just sing the damn song.
